1280296 2012-06-07 08:16:00 I needed a backup battery for my Canon G 1x camera. Happy to use a generic one. Saw a deal on Bestbat in the USA where I could have 2 batteries, a travel charger and a mini tripod all for around $42 USD delivered. Good deal and it arived today only a week in transit.

My question is, as I will probably not use them much except when on holiday, am I best to charge and use them, or just store them till required. I assume if I store them, I won't charge them till I need them?

Any advice please.

1280298 2012-06-07 08:33:00 Just be aware that items like batteries, memory cards are often fakes for the branded ones - they are rebadged. They might be even easier to make for generic items. If you look at a memory card they could have one for under $1US ex. post. Nomad (952)
1280299 2012-06-08 01:21:00 Id imagine it some sort of Li batt. To extend the life you want to put them on a storage charge (eg: charge to 40-80% depending on exact Li type) . You would do a full charge before you use it.

Unfortunately, There's going to be no practical way for you to put that camera batt on a storage charge , your batt charger wont have that function.
So all you can really do is make sure they are fully charged. Maybe alternate between the 2 batts when using your camera.

btw
MANY el-cheapo generic lipo batts work just fine. Being cheap no longer means its rubbish.
The 'branded' batts arnt made by that company anyway, it just their sticker on someone elses batt.
My cellphone bat cost $2 on ebay (yes $2) . It still works perfectly, after over a year.

1280300 2012-06-08 05:59:00 It depends .. a few would think so anyway.
There is a risk of fire risk, or that the memory card may corrupt. If it was a very important session like a wedding ... I bought a Sandish SD card for like 99c USD but didn't take note of the delivery which was like $12USD sent in a envelope. The memory card was counterfeit. If you plug it into the computer, device manager does not say Sandisk and if you use a macro lens and take a photo of the label it's pixelated.
