1280824 2012-06-10 05:08:00 I have conflicted opinions on this one. I do consider wearing a hat at dinner when you've been invited to a restaurant as a little rude, but not enough to make an issue of. I don't understand why people get so upset about being asked to take a hat off, will your brains leak out? is your head in some way in need of protection? Hat on, hat off, what's the big deal either way really. On the other hand I wouldn't have said anything and wouldn't have been bothered by it myself. I think the guy should not have worn the hat, and should not have been upset for being asked to remove it. I also think perhaps the OP should not have asked or not pressed the matter in the first place. Both sides seem to have made a mountain out of a molehill and gives the impression of some underlying tension between them.

I did a brief stint as a security guard standing outside banks (shitty job), despite the sign saying no hats I constantly had to ask people to remove them. Some people react as if you just asked them to get naked and punch their partner in the face (embarrassed and angry). And it's not just elder gentlemen either, one young guy in a baseball cap refused and claimed it was attached to his head. When I followed him in and stood near him as he queued he got very offended, but that's the job and the tellers could have refused to serve him for wearing the hat also.

There quasimodo is your error, you assume brains were present.

In my experience with 17-year-old males, this is generally NOT the case . . .

(There is one of these allegedly-human beings in my household - some of the stories I could tell would curl your teeth!!)

Considering the wearing of a hat is no different from wearing socks, would you expect someone to remove their socks just because you (for some crazy reason) find the wearing of socks an offensive act.

The banks different, I consider that any premises has the right to enforce a dress code, But how crazy would it be if some random civ entered the bank and then started telling people in there that they had to dress in a way they said or they were pig ignorant.

1280829 2012-06-10 08:52:00 It was an issue, but not because he was wearing a hat. It was an issue because you made it an issue by making a big deal of it, and because he wouldn't comply with your wishes as host. He has now apologised for his uncomplience, and I think you should as well for your making a big deal about it. Nick G (16709)
1280830 2012-06-10 09:02:00 The hat isn't the issue, Its someone trying to use their position in a family to control another, treating a potential son-in-law like a child is a dumb immature move.
BS Metla. It has always been considered impolite for a male to wear a hat inside and quite frankly I think it is pathetic that people feel naked without their pathetic hat on.

1280832 2012-06-10 09:13:00 I was brought up with so called "British Upper class" manners. Quite simple, do not wear a hat indoors, raise your hat to a woman when greeting them in the street, walk on the pavement side nearest the road (protected the woman from slops being thrown out of windows), don't put your elbows on the table, pull back a chair for a woman etc etc. When I first came to NZ I opened the car door for a girl and she accused me of thinking that she was too pathetic to open the door herself... I never bothered again! As these customs were British, I would not expect the average Kiwi to use them. In North Africa before WW2 the men used to walk in front with the woman behind carrying the baggage. After the war this was changed to the Woman in front because of the land mines! mzee (3324)

hate to burst your bubble but thats just what you were brought up to think, in other circles no such rubbish is propagated.

That aside, Enlighten me, what is offensive about a hat?

There would have to be some pretty good reasoning behind it.....wouldn't there?

I rank it right up there with white shoes in spring or whatever that particular nonsense happens to be,black shoes at Easter?, damned if I know, Stupidity should be rewarded with contempt.
