1281403 2012-06-14 09:06:00 To take a odd view, I believe it should be lowered. The dole is more than the superannuation benefit. Therefore, by retiring early you would be saving the government money. Nick G (16709)
1281404 2012-06-14 09:08:00 Which is quite correct but how do they get residency without a job??? We have a lot of foreigners working at our workplace and they have a long road to get residency (~2 years). Without the job they wouldnt get it, so where the hell do all the others go to get residency or citizenship without a job??

Maybe if they have direct family in NZ or via investment.

Partially people go to countries with pension and that is is a good place to bring up families and retire. Some people would rather work many of their years overseas b/c might be better for worklife. With the size of the population, you could make more with a burger joint or a restaurant, not just the corporate white collar jobs there. When I was in London there was told a burger place was opened by a NZder and it was a success which they commented that due to the size of the London population. Similarly with salesmans, delivery like couriers and tourist operators.

A cousin might move to Canada for the purpose of bringing up a family they have families in Canada as well, they are in HKG working. The wife is a teacher was also born in CA, graduated from UBC, the husband has his own business. Currently they work long hours, they do have caregiver which they pay for, she might live on the premise too. They are in their 30s. Reason is that family, later for the pension and for education. International colleges over there are expensive. One benefit of international colleges is that they focus more on English so they are better skilled for jobs etc .. Ie/ British or American schools for the child's equiv. of primary school and high school.

I thought the pension was more than $200 and the dole was maybe just more than a student loan / student allowance (per the week) Or are you talking about couples.

1281406 2012-06-14 10:06:00 The unemployment benefit is around 100 dollars less than the NZ Super! Please get the facts right before you comment please.

The rate for an unemployed beneficiary, single over the age of 25 is $204.96 per week after tax. See here (www.workandincome.govt.nz)for all rates.

The rate for a person who is single and living alone on NZ Superannuation is $348.92 per week after tax. See here (www.msd.govt.nz)for all rates.

I do think that pensioners are paid more than those on the unemployment benefit.

1281408 2012-06-14 11:03:00 My only concern is about the workers who have been doing hard manual work for the last 40 years and are basically knackered ... another two years and they may be in the ground.

A lot different to an accountant or doctor who do very little hard manual work and can keep on going ... especially if you fit a couple of "D" size Duracells and replace them every six weeks or so ... :D

1281409 2012-06-14 11:11:00 Thanks to Dr CULLEN and his new tax regime, our PIE tax rate on investments' has dropped from 66 cents in the dollar to 19 cents.

That was over a period of 20 plus years. So a lot of folk have enjoyed our excess taxes and we hope they have made use of it and not peed it up against the wall, lol.

The age should be raised in line with Press reports of people living longer.

We drink a lot for birthday/anniversary celebrations, but it wouldn't hurt to put the price of booze up in line with the ever increasing tobacco hikes, not that we smoke any more.

Lurking.

Lurking.Whats actually up with that. They have hiked up the price of tobacco, they are adding 2c per litre to fuel in the next week or two I heard, yet they leave booze alone. They could happily double the price of booze and I doubt it would put anyone who drinks the stuff off (and if it does, then well and good). Surely that would raise a few billion per year.

Ok, my apologies all. I got my figures round the wrong way.

Seems fair, the apprenticeship for pensioners is considerably longer than that for being unemployed. ;)
