What is the best of Linux...? I have an Ubuntu cd but I think you can install them off a USB, so which is the best to go for?? Most user friendly etc...

Out of the distros I've tried so far, I found linux mint mate to be user friendly, but I had some problems on mine (think it was something I did) and switched to OpenSUSE. Not as user friendly, but I really like it. Try reading through this (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) thread, it might be useful.

1305095 2012-10-06 20:56:00 I'm on Xubuntu at the moment. Gone off Ubuntu due to Unity.

Might switch to Linux Mint with MATE later...

;) Agree with you regarding Unity. I tried to like it for a while but gave up on it eventually. Now I'm quite happy using Kubuntu which is a more traditional desktop environment using KDE. I don't know why more people don't try KDE ... I think it's much better than Gnome.

@pct: Given you're laptop specs (especially if the CPU isn't a dual core) I would go for Xubuntu or Lubuntu. My niece had a P4 2.8Ghz 512Mb 40Gb running Xubuntu 10.04 quite nicely.

1305097 2012-10-08 05:28:00 I used to like KDE back with version 3. Then came KDE 4 and the whole thing was too puffy and laggy for my taste. So I switched to Gnome 2.

Then they killed that off in favour of the puffy and laggy Unity \ Gnome 3

So then I switched to XFCE.

If XFCE turns into a piece of junk, I will no doubt switch again.

1305098 2012-10-08 07:41:00 Then came KDE 4 and the whole thing was too puffy and laggy for my taste. They released it as 4.0 long before it was ready, and drove away a lot of users as a result. They then spent the next few point releases fixing some rather major bugs.

Thankfully, those issues were sorted out quite some time ago, and KDE 4 is now largely bug-free, stable, and fairly light with its resource requirements. Give 4.8 / 4.9 a try - I suspect you'll be pleasantly surprised .
