1305084 2012-10-04 20:01:00 24 months ago approx, I bought a maybe 3yr old laptop, more portable version / tablet. 1.6Ghz, 4GB, 12" screen etc. If you can up the RAM you could just go with Win7. Mine works faultlessly. Nomad (952)

Maybe wail until windows 8 comes out? It (wim7) might get cheaper then, not certain though.

Ubuntu is a subset of linux. Others include linux mint, OpenSUSE, or red hat.

1305091 2012-10-06 02:52:00 And a number of them are lightweight enough to run very quickly, even on an older system such as that which you've got.

(though make no mistake, they are not as user friendly as windows. they'll do alot more if you want them to, but you might have to put some work in to figure out how to do it. you CAN just install it and rock on for the most part, but there are some things that do require fiddling.
Browsing, basic games, office stuff, video, music, etc are all typically available with pre installed or easily installed apps though)
