1304955 2012-10-03 22:14:00 the ram is ddr 166 fyi Slankydudl (16687)
1304956 2012-10-04 00:01:00 ram is 256mb at 166mhz (highest suported frequency by the mobo) with 2 slots and a maximum of 1gb
CPU is socket 478 celeron at 2.4ghz. im not really sure what upgrade can be done to this.
and HD is DMA ultra 100 i think. It runs of its own ribbon cable to the mobo.

I constantly get warnings of low virtual memory so i guess more ram would be good 2 sticks of 256mb should be fine but if your willing to depart with 2 sticks of 512 that would be all fine with me.

So how do i find the dell product key? I think i found it on sticker on the back that has a couple of bar codes on it and made in china.

and lastly how do i find graphics cards for this thing, it has 3x pci slots with one taken by some kind of Ethernet adapter which i can just remove.

PS. i cant wait to remove the heat sink shroud, the back exhaust is rusted from sea air.

1304957 2012-10-04 00:27:00 Product key looks like this: tips4pc.com should be somewhere on the case. If the sticker is missing there is probably some kind of software that can recover the key for you based on the current windows install.

Low virtual memory means all real and virtual memory has been allocated/used. Try increasing the page file size. Google is your friend. Yes adding more ram will help.

You should be able to upgrade to any 478 socket cpu (as long as the bios supports it). I think there are some 3.4ghz Pentiums for that socket.

You can get pci graphics cards if it doesn't have an AGP slot. Have a look here: www.trademe.co.nz nts%2fvideo-cards%2fother&condition=used (watch out for incorrectly listed items) or here dx.com (from memory they sell various pci cards, cheap Chinese webstore so you get what you pay for, don't hope on getting any kind of warranty)

I would also get like a pci to sata adapter and put a modern sata hdd in. Chances of finding an IDE drive with a lot of life left in it that works at highish speeds is pretty low. I would research into this though, from memory pci is like a 66mhz bus so you might not even see a speed increase.

Edit: As a random side note, have you tried bumping up the voltage on your 7950? My 7850 is stable at 1200mhz.

1304958 2012-10-04 00:29:00 You can also retrieve the XP Key while in windows with a program such as magical jelly bean keyfinder.

1304959 2012-10-04 01:13:00 nah i cant find a sticker like that, ill try that program thanks.

And yeah iv upped the voltage but it doesnt seem to be a great overclocker mind you it is a 400mhz over clock. i havent seen many people with 7970's or 7950's getting amazing clocks.

1304960 2012-10-04 04:48:00 I might be able to contribute some RAM.. just have to see whats lying around Myth (110)

Is there a name and model number on the motherboard?

1304962 2012-10-04 06:17:00 0G1548 is the model no. Slankydudl (16687)
1304963 2012-10-04 06:26:00 Just a word of advice on the COA. If its a Dell factory installed OS, then they use a different type of COA. While you can find it with software, and it will usually work to install, it wont Activate, comes up as invalid. If you do what is suggested and call Microsoft, they will tell you to use the COA on the case.

If the PC has been reinstalled previously and used the COA on the case then that will work.

1304964 2012-10-04 07:35:00 okay that is good to know, if i am upgrading the cpu it will be best to re install xp right? Would it be possible to get xp on a usb drive or something from the internet and use that to boot the computer as I don't have an XP disc. Slankydudl (16687)
