1305309 2012-10-05 01:54:00 The Microsoft Impersonator scam has finally got a bit of publicity .
Maybe the tech community needs to give their local communities a heads up .

For months I have heard stories of how people have either been caught out, or confused by the Microsoft Imposter telephone Scam .
These stories were so epic and so inspirational, that I sincerely wanted to be immersed in the full MS imposter experience . I was desperate to get a call from an alleged scammer, and then to deliver a fully righteous and more or less witty burn .

Finally the moment of opportunity came, yesterday . Within an instant my heart was full of joy and wonder . This was my moment . However an epic under performance quickly followed . My mind went blank .

I hadn't prepared, memorized or practiced anything . I hadn't even considered the challenges of performing live . My failure was epic and polite . I informed the tele-scammer that I didn't believe him and didn't want to talk to him .
In abject failure I hung up . Shame was my companion; technical smugness had deserted me .
Within 24 hours I felt a need to right this wrong .
I have prepared an educational video of sorts, for those who like me, may have some performance anxiety (when it comes delivery of phone based wit) .

I hope that this amuses .
You may have some better ideas to share .

1305311 2012-10-05 02:50:00 Cool. I work with at least three people who have been called. One just couldn't understand the strong Indian accent, she believed the person, but couldn't follow the instructions. Another was suspicious, but still wasn't quite sure. Social engineering based on fear, bypasses commonsense. myke (7862)
1305312 2012-10-05 02:55:00 A guy called me and I said I have a mac... He kept trying to convince me and he didn't seem to understand that nothing he said applied to macs... regardless of the fact I don't own a mac Slankydudl (16687)
1305313 2012-10-05 03:19:00 So far I've had 3 calls although it was a while ago. The second one I kept up the "dumb" act for 12 minutes until I made a ringing sound and 'had to go answer the door'. Put the phone down and came back 20 minutes later and they were gone. Funny that.
The third call, after they said they had detected a virus I challenged them about to know that they would have to be spying on me. Did M/soft spy on everybody? What else did they know? "I was looking at a great porno site 3 nights ago and now can't find it, from their records can they tell me what it was."
After about 5 minutes of of questioning about spying the line went dead. :>)

1305314 2012-10-05 03:23:00 lol the same guy i was talking about before he was saying that they had detected errors being sent from my computer. Funnily enough there were some errors from msse about updating the detection things... it crashed halfway through. Slankydudl (16687)
