1305118 2012-10-04 22:25:00 Finally biting the bullet and am looking at buying a laptop. But the one that ticks all the boxes I can't find anywhere in NZ. So what would be the 'gotchas' of buying in the States and importing. Off the top of my head I can see cost, by the time you convert to $US and then 15% duty it is getting up a bit.
At the moment I'm waiting for the release of Windows 8 but would the installed version of Windows be "American" or would there be a 'International' . Would the DVD player only recognise zone 1 and not zone 4 ?

Warranty could be a problem if needed but I have friends who will be living in the States for at least the next 13 months.

I'm looking at the Samsung range but have noted that those models sold in NZ have S01NZ or S04AU in their product codes whereas the one I'm interested in has S01US. Anybody know the significant of that ??

Any other gotchas; like would I have to talk with a twang and drive on the other side of the road ?pressf1.pcworld.co.nz

1305119 2012-10-04 22:56:00 iirc you can change the region encoding on laptop dvd drives up to 4? times. What are you after specifically? Are you 100% sure that it isn't available in NZ? icow (15313)
1305120 2012-10-04 23:17:00 Is the warranty international?
There will be import tax at 15%, not sure if they count the post cost + merchandise cost to calculate the 15%. In theory it is though ref: NZ Customs website calculator.

Was interested in a Samsung Series 7 700Z7CH 3rd Gen Core i7 Intel i7-3615QM / 17.3". Searched all the usual online sites and none of them list it.

1305122 2012-10-04 23:35:00 there's no such thing as an International version of Windows. If you buy it with Windows 8 it will come with Windows 8. For the first time in Windows, there will be an English UK language pack available as a download so you can have IE Favourites instead of Favorites, a Mobility Centre instead of Center etc

yes GST cost is worked out including the shipping charges. You could contact Samsung NZ and ask them if they are bringing that model into NZ. One of the benefits of buying in NZ is the Consumer Guarantees act, assuming you are not buying for business purposes, CGA will effectively give you an extended warranty of arguably another 3-4 years.

DVD region change it depends on the hardware in the computer.

1305123 2012-10-05 00:20:00 The Asus ROG laptop with i7 and 17.3" screen is a very close equivalent.

It's pricey at around NZ $3,500

1305125 2012-10-05 01:29:00 That comes close but I was looking for a 17.3"screen with 1920 x 1080 ( Full HD ) www.cnet.com I won't be lugging it around very much and will be using it outside in sunshine. bugalugs67 (9647)
