| 1304815 | 2012-10-03 02:26:00 | I have an i5 2500k with a stock cooler. Idle temp: 29-35 C Playing Minecraft (Normal Render): 45-52 C Playing Rage: 48-53 C Are those temperatures to high? Should I get a new Cooler? Should I try a different brand of thermal paste e.g. Arctic Silver? I used Z.P. Thermal Paste I did applied the thermal paste in the correct fashion: Drop a BB pellet sized thermal paste in the center of the CPU, mount the Cooler at a perpendicular angle and locking down the cooler securely with no movement whatsoever. |

We have 2 of them and neither has any issues so I won't worry until a HDD fails or something else forces me to strip it down. Then I'll get me wee drill out! :D Would possibly be a bit warm for a tower though. |

| 1304820 | 2012-10-03 02:59:00 | No that's fine, mine ran at about 65 C under prime 95 stress testing at stock with stock cooler. Dangerous temps are in the region of 90 C + but if it went over 70 in normal use I'd get a bit concerned. It's actually fairly hard to damage them from a short burst of heat, they'll shut the system down if they hit the danger threshold. At 4.1Ghz using an Antec Kuhler water cooler it hit about the same as above - low 60's under stress test. My current 3570K is using a Hyper 212 evo and @ 4.2Ghz is hitting the high 50's occasionally getting into the 60's I had an i7 920 a while back, sold it after 2 years and in the process of rebuilding for sale discovered the stock heatsink had never been mounted properly - one of those stupid plastic clips didn't engage. A bit of testing confirmed it had been running 10-15 C hotter than it could have been - for 2 years of rock solid gaming duties...... Which leads me to my tip for mounting intel stock heatsinks, especially when reusing. Look at the white plastic bits that go through the motherboard and ensure they are all pulled down completely out of the black piece as far as they can go without forcing anything, sometimes they stay partly up inside and will not clip into the motherboard like that. |

Did you remove the factory thermal compound and use paste instead? the stock cooler comes with it pre applied and you just stick it on. Perfectly adequate if not overclocking. I did use it at first but I think I stuffec it up when putting in the cooler. I put it in on an angle. Then I lifted it up again to check blah blah blah. So I put new paste on. (after cleaning the CPU and heastink with alchohol of course) |
