| 1281373 | 2012-06-13 00:32:00 | It appears that there may be no increase in retirement age until 2020. As the baby boomers reach retirement age there is a requirement for more and more money to be found to provide pensions. Read here (www.nzherald.co.nz). "Today in New Zealand, for every four people in working age there will be one of pension age, three by the mid 2020s and only 2.4 in 2050." I see the best solution to be compulsory superannuation contributions so that we have a separate superannuation fund which provides for pensions. While I was in the Army I was required to contribute to the Government Superannuation Fund (for Government employees). I never missed the money coming out of my wages but now that I am getting annuities I am glad I was in the scheme. During the 1970s Labour introduced a compulsory superannuation scheme which was scrapped by Rob Muldoon's Government when they come into power. |

One would have to be rather naive to believe anything they say today will not be changed to the governments advantage at the drop of a hat. The notable exception being MPs retirement arrangements which is the only thing they never argue about. | CliveM (6007) | ||

One way or another, does it matter if it is a separate programme or a integrated one like they have now. Funds goes in and they make their way out. People could also organise their own scheme away from the govt. |

It is not a huge amount, but has enabled me to have that little bit extra per month, without which I could not afford to keep my home. I also joined Kiwisaver when It started, I was 60, and will draw that out later in the year when I turn 65. It will be enough to get a new (used) car which I need. Cheers, LL |

| 1281379 | 2012-06-13 01:26:00 | Actually the Labor one of the early 1970s was a good one. If it had been kept going we would not have this discussion now about the cost of retirement and age. Pity it's always been a subject that changes every time a gov is changed. | paulw (1826) | ||
| 1281380 | 2012-06-13 01:52:00 | Sadly I think that the 'Super' will have to be raised and sooner rather than later...makes sense. I too joined 'Kiwi Saver' and sadly the government can't leave it alone, they keep changing it,if I had my time again weekly Lotto tickets is a better idea. | ruup (1827) | ||

Pity it's always been a subject that changes every time a gov is changed. The big worry about Govt run schemes like that is what and where is the money going to be invested as we all know they are no good at backing winners. |
