57932 2002-06-28 04:09:00 Problem with printer memory when printing even medium sized graphic.
Printer runs short of memory - sometimes printing part of required page.
I read somewhere (poss in PC World?) that old (4Mb) memory simms can be used. OEM memory is available at $300+ but the possibility of using old simms would be preferable if poss.
Any ideas
Thanks

57933 2002-06-28 05:35:00 The 5L uses a JEIDA card - like a PC card format; simms won't fit. Are you printing from XP? If so, the problem is a lack of a host driver - you are forced to use the PCL driver, which is relatively memory hungry. The only other option is to use 300dpi (which looks more like 75 dpi than 300). wuppo (41)
57934 2002-06-28 23:32:00 Thanks Wuppo
I'm running Win 98 so it looks as though I'm out of luck with a reasonably priced cure. You're right about the resolution of 300 dpi option.
Thanks for your help

57935 2002-06-29 03:03:00 If you are are running Win98, you shouldn't have too many problems. Check to make sure you are using the latest version of the host driver ( http://www.hp.com ) The PCL driver will easily overflow the standard memory (with a complex page).

Also check you have your parallel port set to EPP. With the host driver, the rasterisation of the image is performed by the PC, and if your computer is up to it, the image is fed to the printer (partly) on the fly. This allows quite complex pages to be printed on a printer with only 1MB of memory. I can print quite complex pages from win98 without problem (web pages, pdfs etc).

57936 2002-06-29 03:19:00 Hi Woody

Have noticed some printer memory over at trademe.co.nz not sure what type/brand but think it was in computers>memory category rather than printers.

57937 2002-07-01 06:15:00 Thanks again Wuppo,
I downloaded a driver from HP but I think it was the same one that I've been using. However, it seems to have improved things. What is a host driver tho? How do I find it? The one that I found is PCL. Would the host driver be more suitable?
It's improved things anyway - I owe you one!
Tks

I don't know why, but the 5L host driver is no longer reachable (bundle lj825) www.hp.com

I suspect it may have something to do with the HP / Compaq grouping, as the website has got totally re-arranged. I can email it to you if you like - its around 3MB in three notional diskettes.

The host driver is definitely faster than PCL and can manage more complex print jobs without running out of memory. If you have the origional installation disks for the 5L, you should have the host driver on those.

Contact me on wuppo99 AT hotmail.com if you want the lj825 sent.
