57909 2002-06-28 02:37:00 I recently saw an article on setting up web pages to view using a home network. I thought I'd like to give it a go to learn a bit more about the technology but unfortunately, I lost the link. Does anyone know the article I'm talking about? Failing that, where's the best place to go for an "Idiot's Guide"?

My home network is a mix of Windows 2000 Professional, XP Home and Windows 98. I have IIS installed on the Win2K machine but I don't know a lot about it. I've got as far as finding out how to make an HTML document my default page on that machine so if one of the other users types in my IP address in IE, they get shown that page but I'm really at a loss to progress from there.

57910 2002-06-29 03:48:00 You're probably there already. You have a Web site. Have a look at your public Library. They will probably have a lot of good books about how to write HTML etc, and how to make Website content. Look for "Idiot's Guide to ..." and ".... for Dummies" --- they are all good books.

But obviously, you've got the "home page", it's just the details that you need to fill in.

57911 2002-06-29 03:54:00 Well, I'm not really there. It isn't terribly friendly having to type in my IP address to get to my web page. What I was hoping to do was find a good source of information about mapping IP addresses to WWW names and all the other mechanics. Good idea about the library, though. I will have a browse through their catalogue and see what they have on Internet technology under Windows. lakeryan (706)
57912 2002-06-29 04:00:00 Real programmers write IP addresses in binary " 1010.0.0111.0100" ;-) .

An answer I gave Chris earlier might fit your need there, an LMHOST file on each machine
is probably what you need. The posting is named after me ...

57913 2002-06-29 04:07:00 On second thoughts, perhaps not. The WINS server might be easier ... a Windows expert would know. Use your Help, look for nameserver, resolution, and network things in general. If you can see your computers in Network Neighbourhood, you should be able to use names. If you can't see them in NN, get that fixed, and it will probably all work. Graham L (2)
57914 2002-06-29 05:44:00 Lakeryan, If you want an "Idiots Guide" ask me. I'm a 'little bit' literate computer "Idiot" (but learning from F1). I ask some "Idiotic" questions on here sometimes. Poppa John :D
Here's one, where is the Browser for the Bold, Italics etc? ?:| PJ.

57915 2002-06-30 00:07:00 I tend to forget about the built-in help. I've done a search and it points me at further information on using IIS on your Intranet. Unfortunately when I click on the link for further information, it comes up with an error as page is not found. I guess that means I haven't installed IIS correctly. Anyway, thanks for the pointers about machine names in Network Neighbourhood as that has led me to find the appropriate information and a useful little Administration applet called Personal Web Server. That, at first glance, seems to have the Idiot's Guide that will show me what I need to know. lakeryan (706)
57916 2002-06-30 03:39:00 Yes, I thought as I went home that you might not have the network stuff installed correctly. If the help doesn't help ;-) , It might be worth uninstalling and reinstalling network on all of them. (Probably undo all , then do them one by one, to avoid each adapting to the wrong stuff already there on the others). I see we have an FAQ for Networks on PressF1 ... you might go through that. There is a suggestion that it's best to have the network cables disconnected while installing the software. Graham L (2)
