58261 2002-06-29 06:48:00 I have recently set up my webpage with Orcon and I've been using WS_FTP95 LE very successfully. It is free and if you grab a copy I can hand-hold you through using that to transfer your files to Orcon. Susan B (19)
58262 2002-06-29 07:24:00 Hi, like Susan I use WS-FTP LE 5.08 - free program available from: tucows.ihug.co.nz

To use it you need 3 pieces of information:
The host Name/Address
Your login name
Your password.

You run the program and click on new.

The first box says "Profile Name". This is for your information so you can put what you like (my site is www.details.co.nz so the profile name is "Details")

The second box is the host /name address. Your host will give you this. (Mine, to give you an idea of the format is: "homepages.ihug.co.nz")

The third box is UserID (Mine is "Squince" - created it before Details, my name was used so we used the cat. It had been a long night)

The fourth box is password - here you put your password.

Ignore the rest of the boxes.

********
Put your info in the boxes, then hit "OK" to connect.

Once connected you will see 2 sets of files - local ones (your machine), remote ones (the ISPs machine).

To upload files you highlight a file then click on the arrow that points to the server and it copies it over.
********

OK, that's how to use my program. I also use Leap FTP at work. Same sort of stuff but in different places with more buttons to play with (someday I'll work out what all the buttons do).

To use your program locate the 3 pieces of required information, enter them and try to connect.

If you still have problems - repost to this thread.

58263 2002-06-29 08:24:00 I now have WS-FTP LE 5.08 installed, tried to follow the instructions, but have no joy so far.... :(.

So yes please, I need some 'hand-holding' through this.

Many thanks.

58264 2002-06-29 09:30:00 Hi there,

Do you have the 3 critical pieces of information:

Host Name/Address
UserID
Password

You should have received an email from your host with this information.

ihug have a step by step tutorial on how this program up to access the ihug server www.ihug.co.nz

This, of course, shows how to set it up for ihug rather than your host. Use the tutorial inserting your 3 critical pieces of information in the appropriate fields.

Half way down the page it says "Click on the Startup tab". Ignore this step as it will probably be different.

If you still have problems ask again.

58265 2002-06-29 09:42:00 I assume that your website follows standard practice with your homepage called index . htm or index . html? It needs to be, if it isn't .

I would rather "hand hold" while actually in contact with you - do you have MSN chat? If you do can you seek authorisation from me, my email is topazz at the usual hotmail .

If I don't see you online tonight before 9:30 send me an email and we'll arrange another time . That is if you wish to .

58266 2002-06-29 10:09:00 Susan & Heather - I went to: . ihug . co . nz/support/homepages/publishing/ws-ftp-le/in" target="_blank">www . ihug . co . nz dex . html
as suggested, and I get stymied right at the very finish - I get a message at the bottom of the page:

"Connected to . . . . .
STOR index . html"

and then in red:
"550 index . html: Permission denied" . All of this after getting "Received 124 bytes, transfer succeeded" after clicking OK on the Session Properties page .

And yes, Susan, I have a homepage "index . html" . As I said, this webpage works OK in Geocities . I don't have MSN chat at this stage .

Having gone this far, I'd better finish the job!

58267 2002-06-29 10:20:00 Once the FTP program gets you to the Orcon site you need to make a new directory (click the MkDir button) and give it a name. That will be your main directory. I gave mine the same name as my account.

Once that's there double-click on the folder then in the left hand pane navigate to your hard drive folder where your index is, click on it and send it over to the other window.

58268 2002-06-29 10:20:00 Ahhhh....
OK, I typed "550 permission denied" into google. 1st entry took me to the WS_FTP site (never knew this was there before) and the answer

support.ipswitch.com

From what you have said it sounds like you are logging in OK (I take it you can see files listed on both sides of the screen?). If this is correct then you are through the first hurdle.

The next bit is finding the directory that you upload to. Your account (on the remote side of the screen) probably has one or more directories already in it. What are their names?
Heather P (163)
58269 2002-06-29 10:22:00 Before doing as Susan said - what folders are already there? Heather P (163)
58270 2002-06-29 10:25:00 When logged into Orcon, move up through the directories until you see one called "htmdocs" or something like that.

Open that one, and place your index.htm file in there, overwriting the orcon default one. Then it will work.

I think the error 550 is that you cannot copy a file into the location you were trying??
