58317 2002-06-29 06:42:00 I have been having intermittent problems reading a primary slave, Maxtor 51024u2 10Gb (set to slave), connected behind a Seagate Barracuda 40Gb jumpered to master with non ATA compliant slave (the only slave allowed on this drive apart from cable select).
M'board is Asus A7V266.
Sometimes I have had to reboot and let cmos recognise the drive automatically. Sometimes I would have to do this a number of times before cmos recognised the slave successfully.
I thought this may be a cable problem so change to another cable with no result.
Everything has been working fine although the drive has been taken out and replaced a couple of times recently.
Is this drive now non readable or am I missing something basic?
Thanx for any hints or help.

58318 2002-06-29 08:03:00 Does it matter where on the IDE cable you plug it in, ie end of cable for master? Scotty D (491)
58319 2002-06-29 11:12:00 One of my hard drives needs tapping with a screwdriver to get it started after the PC has been off for a while. The spindle that the disks spin on can get sticky and there is not much that can be done if this is the problem. I just leave the PC on now. Marty2001 (421)
58320 2002-06-29 11:50:00 With the seagate, the jumper should be set to 'Master or Single Drive'. This doesn't mean it can't have a slave - it's the normal jumpering for a Master with or without an ATA compliant slave. wuppo (41)
58321 2002-06-30 09:25:00 Hey thanx for the reply, I have tried both drives on both ends of the cable with no result. Cmos won't auto detect a primary slave so I go to manually enter the drive settings as on the drives label, cmos won't let me enter the correct number of cylinders (16383) for the drive and overrides with a default setting (255) which is obviously far below. There are other options but none seem to work either.
When rebooting a message comes up saying "Primary slave failed". I am asked to press f1 to continue and bootup continues successfully without the primary slave.
