58612 2002-06-30 09:51:00 I posted this earlier under "search instead of Open", and even with all the help I got, I still haven't managed to fix it. The short story is that when I double click a folder, it opens 'search'. I went to file types to revert it back 'explorer', and it reads "folder N/A". In fact there are quite a few file types with N/A beside them. Does that mean not available, or what? I can't edit, set default or anything, as it is greyed out. CAn't use windows restore, as I loose updated Nortons. Any info greatly appreciated. :( supergran (108)
58613 2002-07-01 06:50:00 Ummm. I can see one problem. A folder does not have a file type. It isn't a file; it's a directory. That means that you are looking in the wrong place to fix the problem. That "open with" table handles files which use programmes. Perhaps a Windows expert will know exactly where to look. Graham L (2)
58614 2002-07-01 08:25:00 When I click in my puter, running Windows 95, it says that a folder opens with Explorer, which the puter I am trying to fix says it opens with, nothing. There is just nothing there. I rung someone who also runs ME, and theirs also opens in Explorer, so that is what I have been trying to get back. But thanks for the comments, I will go check Microsoft site, to see if I can find anything out there. supergran (108)
58615 2002-07-01 08:59:00 I will describe what happens to me sometimes that sounds kinda like what you are saying (maybe)
I have one particular folder that had almost 15,000 pictures in it. Windows would attempt to open the explorer window, and would be "searching" for some time. What i would see was the wee torch icon, flashing from left to right as my machine packed a sad on me. Eventually i would get to see the content of the folder in the normal way that windows displays this. When the folder topped 15,000 the wait was only exceptable if it was coffee time anyway.
I run far too many background programs, and don't have alot of spare RAM, something i assume wont help me here.
The cure, was to sort through the folder, and move the content into smaller folders that windows could handle.

This of course may be completely irrelevant to you, but on the other hand, it may help.

58616 2002-07-01 13:39:00 Hi again supergran - i followed your last post and prob with the opening in search - i see you feel the problem is in explorer. In the last posting i replied and asked you to click on properties you said you could but didn't get back to me - if you can go properties and find out what kind of file is in one of the folders e.g jpg mime etc... that may be a start, as you may be able to change what opens them - just a thought or perhaps a workaround? Don't know if it makes sense??
I also was reading this: You can get explorer to open in a different folder if you right-click on the icon choose properties (like i was thinking last time) .Then click on the Shortcut tab. After the program name in the target window, type a space then the folder you want to start in. (Not sure if that is relelvant to your prob though!!) May be going along the wrong lines there but i think the properties thing i first suggested so you know what type of files are there may be a good start! HTH - you will know if it is right or not i don't use ME!!

58617 2002-07-02 08:58:00 I just scanned your letter, will read and take notes in a minute, cos it isn't my puter I am trying to fix. But the Yellow folders that just about everything is in, including windows, are what I am talking about. Open c: drive, and you have lots of yellow folders. They are what is opening in 'search', Not the thingy going around and around, but the whole window is 'search'. I know I am not explaining this well, but will try posting next time I am attempting to fix this other puter. When you open c drive and go to file, you can click 'new' and look to see what you want to put there, and first on my puter is 'folder'. That is the sort of folder I mean. supergran (108)

I hope I am not repeating others, but it sounds like your explorer.exe program has been somehow replaced by search.exe.

What happens when you go Start - select "run", then type "explorer.exe" without the quote marks and press enter?

If explorer program is OK then you should get a normal explorer screen and be able to open folders.

If not, your explorer.exe is corrupt and you will either need to restore or reload windows

58620 2002-07-03 08:26:00 I will try that next time I go over, but makes sense to me. No I haven't tried that yet. It isn't my puter, just one I am trying to fix, that kids have had a lot of access to, with puter illiterate parents. But they are learning. As am I. LOL supergran (108)
58621 2002-07-14 00:08:00 Hey Supergran....you have EXACTLY the same thing as me. I'm trying to find the answer too. In XP-Pro when I double left click any folder I get an empty 'Search Results' Window. Also if I right click "Search' in bold letters is at the top of the drop down menu....I'm stuck on this one!! wattie (613)
