58403 2002-06-29 12:06:00 I find XP Home to be slow compared to ME. Loading files takes longer, and there is a delay on FTP transfers ( could be the firewall? ).
CPU is 500mhz and 268 RAM.

Is XP slower as a price for stability?

Have you installed xp over me?

cheers,

58406 2002-06-29 23:13:00 Hi Mzee,

Did you converted your drive from Fat32 to NTFS during the upgrade? If you did I would first suspect that your performance issues are related to small NTFS cluster sizes on your hard drive . When a hard drive that was previously formatted with DOS tools (Fdisk and Format, creating FAT16 or FAT32 partitions) is converted to NTFS, there is frequently a problem that causes a tiny 512-byte cluster size under NTFS . That's the smallest cluster size NTFS allows (smaller cluster size means there is less wasted disk space but takes longer for the disk to access files) . The solution is to convert the cluster sizes to at least 4K .

Windows XP's built-in Disk Defragmenter tool displays NTFS cluster sizes if you know where to look . Launch the defragger (right click the disk drive in My Computer and choose Properties > Tools > Defragment Now) . Then click the Analyze button and then the View Report button . The cluster size is plainly listed in the report .

Two solutions exist if you have the smaller cluster size . 1 . Reformat the drive using Windows XP's Format and Fdisk tools, or 2 . dynamically convert the cluster sizes using PowerQuest's Partition Magic or Paragon Partition Manager .

58407 2002-06-30 00:36:00 As well as the above suggestions, right click "My Computer" on the desktop select "Properties" > Advanced > Settings & tick the radio button "Adjust for best performance" & this will turn off all the resource hungry visual effects. Stumped Badly (348)
58408 2002-06-30 12:58:00 XP is double booted with ME & 98se via "Boot Magic"
XP is running on Fat32 so that it can share files with the others.
XP is running as lean as possible, no fancy garbage.
