2002-07-01 09:10:00 | When I attempt to access a web site my daughter has built (building) I receive the following message, apparently the URL works on everyone else's computer but mine. She created the web site on my computer. It is important that I can access this site as my daughter created it for my eldest son who has recently died. Any help would be very much appreciated. This is the message I get: Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Apache/1.3.26 Server at dot.nu Port 80 Thanks Rusty

2002-07-01 09:21:00 | If your daughter is using space provided by her ISP, the you might have to put her login name after the address. eg homepages.isp.co.nz The message is being generated because you are trying to access the root directory on the server, which is almost always only available to administrators. Alternatively, you may try index.htm or index.html at the end of the address. Index.html (or .htm) is the default page to load when your browser wants to access a directory.

2002-07-01 09:26:00 | What are you trying to access the site through (A browser like IE or an FTP program to upload files)? Did your daughter call the first page index.htm or index.html or some other name? Is the site in a specific directory? Are you typing in the correct path? I have actually met this problem on a specific server. You needed to type in the full path and filename else the "Forbidden connection" message came up. Heather

2002-07-03 10:37:00 | Thanks Heather, I am attempting to access the site using I.E. 6.0. My daughter is using my computer to build the site. Apparently the URL works on everyone else's computers but not mine for some reason. Thanks for your suggestions but so far no good. Regards Rusty

2002-07-03 22:38:00 | Are you 110% certain you are typing in the site name and filename correctly? To be 120% certain - open the site on another machine, copy the address (by highlighting, copying and pasting), email it to yourself and click on the link. This may seem silly but it is the guaranteed way of eliminating a typo as the problem. Once this has been established beyond any doubt you can then look at the less obvious causes.
