59002 2002-07-01 16:42:00 I've been with Paradise for years (mebbe 5 or more) & used to find them PDG, but over the last 6 months or more (or is it just since the Telstra/Saturn/Clear takeover) they seem to have gone to seed .

Whereas previously a 'busy' or a 'timeout' was rare these are now commonplace, & where the helpdesk was previously competent & quick they are now . . . . not .

Do I go shopping for a new ISP, or is this just typical of the new era of 'efficient competition' we hear so much about?

Can anybuddy comment or recommend a good second-tier ISP, as I would rather not support Telecon, Clear . not, or iHug .

Ta

59004 2002-07-01 22:12:00 Hmnn, must be an index prob, when I go to pg23 the 3rd item down is 'c:drive window at startup', or are you being too subtle for me Laury?

59005 2002-07-02 00:20:00 Hi

It is actually a good question. I have noticed a steady decline of good ISP service ever since that fat southern cross cable went in.

I am having problems with my own ISP (Slingshot) and am pretty much in situ at the moment..

I'm not sure whats the problem by my mate in oamaru upgraded to dsl and is schweat, of corse thats only an option if u can afford it.

59008 2002-07-02 07:44:00 Hi Broosee,

I don't know whether freenet is available in New Plymouth.
But we are very happy with it here in Hawke's Bay. Never busy and only $ 14.75 per month for unlimited use.

Hope you find what you are looking for, Antonia

59009 2002-07-02 08:06:00 Up till recently i have been so positive about my paradise-cable connection that i have even been gently flamed by those who are stuck with dial up ( those who feel food is of greater importance than cable) now the times may even be a changing here. i had a one off weird thing with the cablemodem resetting itself a couple of months back, it did it several times and my connection was down for several minutes... As one might imagine i was furious, but seeing it was just a one off thing i decided to let it go..
The self resetting cable modem has been doing it again though, it did it last week some time. I rang paradise i gave up waiting. When i rang telstra, who are after all the cable providers, i got a well meaning, obviously stressed, help staffer, who was not able to give me too much helpful advise, she suggested that i should keep an eye on it, and we might need to replace it. She was unable to tell me how i should keep an eye on it, nor what i should do with the logs i gather.
Its failed twice this evening, and i've been forced off line for at least 10 minutes per time, that i am aware of... NOT HAPPY...
At one point it seemed as though i was the only happy internet user on the forum. Now i get to put telstra-paradise put to the test, and see if they perform or avoid the issue.

59010 2002-07-02 09:12:00 At first I felt the prob was in my system as I had had ongoing agro onboard for years due to some clash between different generations of Windows & Outlook & lots of switches/splitters at home being agrivated by any speed over 40kbs, then I went onto XP & XP Office & for a few months all was VERY sweet . . . then I get this timeouts & 'cant find server' trouble & I spent a lot of time pissing around trying to sort it before contacting Paradise & being told that they actually WERE having timeouts & connections trouble etc due to overloading, even had an email from one of their admins saying the same thing!

So, just recently I was getting more grief than ever trying to download a couple megs graphics file & contacted the helpdesk . . . & some smartarse insisted there were NO such problems, he had NEVER heard of any such etc etc, that the prob woulda been in MY system, that he/they could not / would not offer any support to advise me how to adjsut Outlok etc, & oh by the way the final gem 'we dont support attachments'!!!!

What crap eh . Hence I'm keen to leave the buggers, not just for a steadier service but less bullshit too!

Has anybuddy had experience with Actrix, Maxnet or Orcon please?

Cheers
Bruce

59011 2002-07-04 02:22:00 We're just into year 2 with E3, in Auckland, though we're in the Hokianga. Get disconnected very rarely, equally rarely have probs connecting. Last i recall deals were about 15 -20 $ month. (They gave us a special discount coz we're a community library (ie non-funded.)
