59609 2002-07-04 00:37:00 Does anybody have an idea what the (remaining) installed user base of this operating system is? Any sites I can check to get some figures?

Cheers
Tom

59610 2002-07-04 01:19:00 Presumably you would also need to include Win98, even though many people wouldnt know they had DOS? Or are you just thinking of DOS6.22 or earlier? Terry Porritt (14)
59611 2002-07-04 03:16:00 I still have 1 old pc at home wit Dos and I know of about 10 boxes still being supported for "real production" work running 6.2.2 jst_nz (559)
59612 2002-07-04 03:28:00 Thanks, Terry. I'm only interested in workstations that boot directly to the C:> command prompt.
You are right - W9x have bits of the old "DOS-ghost-in-the-machine" kernel that some people don't know (or care) about.

I remember something like 600,000 users about 2-3 years ago.

Any numbers?

59613 2002-07-04 03:31:00 Good for you!

OK, so now I know there are at least 10 more machines apart from the ones still in "production" use at the office.

59614 2002-07-04 03:58:00 I use it often. My laptop (with 4Mb) can't run Linux. I've got Turbo Pascal, and assembler, so can write any programmes I need. And there's still Simtel, and a collection of CDs and floppies from magazines. Worldwide, there will still be plenty. It's well known and for any application where all you need is a programme loader, why add the extra disk and memory to install a GUI? I suspect that there might be a lot of POS stuff using it. I know that the self-issue machines at Christchurch public library run on DOS. Graham L (2)
