59534 2002-07-03 22:03:00 I have a lazy modem. My computer hardware was recently upgraded to a P4/1600 with a 56KAMR modem but I am still using Win98se.
When I connect to the IE or OE the modem sign on the desktop flashes. After a minute or two it stops. A check on the details shows that while the time connected is still being recorded in seconds, no bytes are being received or sent. After a period of 15-20 seconds the modem comes to life again and bytes move rapidly. The cycle then repeats. And the frustration grows.
Is there any setting that I can be adjusted to keep the connection operating continuously? Any help would be appreciated

59535 2002-07-03 23:05:00 This modem uses the AMR (Modem Riser) slot on some motherboards.

Accordingly it is a bit different, and note the warning given below from a supplier of AMR modems:

"Note: certain ISP's, such as AOL and Prodigy, have difficulties with AMR modems. If you have difficulties getting access to your ISP with a Modem Riser, it may be due to inherent incompatibility between the Modem and your ISP"

As to this being your problem, who knows (and good luck getting an answer from your ISP)

Your problem is not unique however, and has been thrashed on this forum recently without resolution.

The common thread seems to be internal modems of the PCI (or AMR) type which are "soft" modems, or a collection of components that act as a modem under the instruction of the CPU.

External SERIAL PORT (not USB) modems are "hardware" modems thare really are modems and seem less affected by this problem.

Sometimes the problem is congested ISP servers I believe, that just get too busy to return to you.
