2002-07-03 09:28:00 | Hi all, I have a bone to pick with xtra, and was wondering if anybody out there knew exactly how much effort it took to set up an email mailbox at the ISP end. That is, I want xtra to set up another POP3 mail box for my wife, but they reckon they want to charge me a $27.95 "joining fee". So I'm trying to put forward an argument to tell them to go shove it, and set me up anyway. All help appreciated!!! Cheers Craig. :D

2002-07-03 09:56:00 | Hi,why don't you just get her an alias. You get 5 free aliases(I think)with Xtra,so just set her one up and set up a folder in your e-mail program, and direct her mail to that. Peter

2002-07-03 10:19:00 | If you want an entirely separate POP3 mailbox, it is essentially a separate account. While one would question the cost anyway, its no different to requesting a new account from another ISP is it? I can possibly understand your reasoning for wanting one, as sharing a POP3 account means that unless you leave mail on the server, whoever clears it gets the lot, and you may be clearing it from different locations. I run 2 POP3 accounts, and had no problem with the charge as they are unrelated to each other, as yours will effectively be. Hence I struggle with your issue on costs. An alias shares a POP3 box. You want a new POP3 box. One of mine is my domain name, and I was alert enough to wildcard it, so as far as aliases go, its not 5, its practically infinite, but they don't tell you that it can be done, you need to ask.

2002-07-03 11:02:00 | I see your point. I do believe that it's a bit silly when the likes of iHug set up to 5 POP3 services for their customers on the Ultra satellite service. I mean it's reall ynot that much work for them to set my wife up, as all they'd be doing is slapping her account on to the back of mine, and charging us $27.95 for the priviledge........ I guess it all just seems silly because the hard yards are already done with me already being a member..... Hmmmm indeed....... C. :D

2002-07-03 11:04:00 | This works for outlook express. Set her up as an alias, and set up a second identity in outlook express (You will have to do this anyway if you want to keep the mail separate). You can then set up a 'rule' not to download mail from the server if the mail it is addressed to her, and a rule in hers not to download yours.
