2002-07-05 20:29:00 | The readers vote is completely meaningless. A person can only vote for a computer or program or whatever that he actualy has used. If you vote for what you have it means you like it. If not you don't vote. So the biggest sellers have the most users and so must attract the most votes. This means Microsoft wins again. To mean anything there should be provision to vote also for the worst. And the votes must be scaled to the number of items sold. I know a young chap who a few years ago voted for Microsoft as the best office suite. I knew he didn't have this program and I asked him why he voted for it. He replied it was the best because MS had sent him some advertising material telling him how good it was. To justify the money I spend on software, I MUST say that what I have is the best. Alternatively what I don't have is the worst. Still it helps Kris & co. fill up the magazine. Cheers, Jack

2002-07-06 02:30:00 | "The readers vote is completely meaningless". In fact, any post-in, email-in, phone-in, mail-in, etc-in "poll" is completely meaningless. That is technically called a "self-selected sample". "Properly conducted" randomly sampled opinion polls are not always very meaningful either. It depends on how ethically the questions are written. The Canterbury Regional Council had a survey made of bus users. One of the questions was 'Would you like a simpler, easier to understand fare structure?". Of course they got the answer they wanted. Everyone wants a a simpler easier to understand fare structure. ;-) What we are getting is a one-level fare (instead of two), and a halving of the time a ticket can be used for the return trip. Nobody wants a 200% to 400% fare increase . The survey didn't ask that. ]:)

2002-07-06 12:35:00 | Thanks Mike and Mutts, reading both posts and both make sense, and yes, Me is cheapest at around $80 compared with $160 for 98SE, second hand. So tis back to the drawing board, but the things against Me sound pretty reasonable as well. | supergran (108) | |
2002-07-06 16:04:00 | Hi ya supergran, I ran ME for about a year and I dont think it crashed once. I did have the odd problem with it, but they were all stupid things I had done to it. Its fairly bulletproof. In saying that, generally speaking, users that have no troubles with ME have done a clean instal. (ie. wipe hard drive and instal) It appears that if you try to upgrade your existing to ME (over writing) thats what causes the conflicts. Give it a go and good luck, :)

This sounds more like a problem with the windows update . As to your saying that windows updates automatically while online without telling the user, this is perhaps trying to overcome the problem of people who don't know what they're doing never updating . People who know what they're doing can easily turn the feature off, but its pretty difficult getting people who can't even program a VCR to think of and to actually run a windows update . It was a good idea from MS that didn't really work properly due to the fact of buggy updates, not a bug in ME itself . > The system restore folder, nice piece of programming > for testing as a add on/beta version . this has been > fixed in xp however when me was released check out > the size on some of those folders and note the avg > user can't delete them, so far the biggest i've seen > is 20gb, when you have a 40gb hdd thats half your hdd > gone . To have a system restore folder at 20gb the user would have to have set the max size to 50% - the default is around 2% (if I remember rightly) . > There is so much to say i could write for hours, > these are a coiuple of examples . ok main brand makers keep going - I'm still waiting for genuine "bugs" to be mentioned . > like hp, compaq stuck with me cause it was a major > expense to remarket the 98 and switch all those mass > pc's around the world from me back to 98, this would > cost more than the company could handle . do the math, > do you think these companies could handle the > expense . | 59724 | 2002-07-07 10:41:00 | I think we are starting to drift off the voting point here, I too have ME and love it with only user induced problems so far.....( too musch titu ). I also have a PC company puter here at the moment that I have just wiped the ME and am installing 98 due to the lack of resources etc in the damn thing. We're voting and expressing our personal opinions so please cut back on the "discussion" and keep to a friendly level. I love my phillips monitor but cant really comment on others as this is the only monitor I have owned. The best Anti Virus in my opinion is Norton mainly from ease of use and the consistantly good scores in AV trials. Sad to say but for ISP I wil have to go with telecom here. I just switched back from quicksilver after months of slowing performance and have tried several others also but none can seem to meet the speeds. Best PC help site is still PressF1 and I have tried others but none seem to quite make the grade As Forrest Gump said "and that's all I have to say about that" |

2002-07-08 02:51:00 | Yes, our opinions are coloured by our own experiences. I had some shocking experiences with Compaq due to delivery issues when they changed to SAP a few years back and that put me right off. I know it has nothing to do with quality or anything. The devil you know is always the "warts and all" view versus the devil you don't. I think that we can all benefit from good and bad experiences of others. Personally, I like the Philips 107s and similar. They do the job, and are reasonably priced. Don't have an opinion on others. Be useful to know what favoured apps are in certain areas - not Office, but photo re-touching, firewalls, Av, etc. For what it's worth, that is what I think. robo.
