59709 2002-07-04 07:07:00 I like Philips monitors
Why? I have had 20+, not had problems (was an IT manager...)
Currently have a Philips 15" LCD, it is superb

Only use o/b graphics so pass on that

Presently use a PIII cpu, but who cares, it goes...

Best OS is XP, had DOS 1.1 - 6.22, Win 3.1, 3.11, 95, 98SE, ME, XP
Next to XP, ME was good as well

Dont file share, no comment

Use McAfee 6.1, no problems

59711 2002-07-04 09:04:00 Well, if you want my 2 cents worth (rounded up to 5)...

I don't really think there is a best anything. Okay, I'm not talkig about new products. What I'm talking about is things like: I use several image editing software packages for any given project. Being a graphic artist, I like flexibilty and the scope available for creativity, for exaxmple you can't do Jack Shite with MS Paint. So, I use CorelDraw 7 for large projects because its fast and flexible, and I have been using it for an obviously long time. I use Fireworks 4 because I love the combination of vector / bitmap creation, and it's animation creation. I also use Photoshop for effects and final touch ups, and exporting to various formats.

Get my drift? Generally, I make do with what I got, and the best in anything is the one that suits the person using it the best.

59713 2002-07-05 01:56:00 Ha, Elwin - you have a different job every time you make a post! Check them out. From memory - Computer Engineer, Mechanic, Graphics Artist, and I am sure I remember someting about security consultant or something. I will do a search of you posts, and post some evidence. LOL :D DickTracy (848)
59714 2002-07-05 03:35:00 Ha yerself. Call me diverse... I'm all them and then some (except security consultant - never claimed to be one of them). Gotta keep ya skill range open these days...

(Don't ask me why then I'm unemployed...)

59715 2002-07-05 04:51:00 Sorry, had a look - it was website engineer, not security blah. Just keeping you honest!! I am glad you have cheered up a little since the new forum opened. Good to have someone with your experience along. BTW - this pseudonym is not my regular one - I am on a public PC, and so I am using a false logon.

59716 2002-07-05 09:11:00 Just curious about Me, cos I am running Windows 95, and have been told to upgrade to windows98se cos Me was crap. Now I have to admit, I have used 98, 98SE, Me, and XP, as well as 95, but my op system is getting a little behind the times, so would be interested in comments, 98se v Me. As for monitors, I love my new Phillips, and as for everything else in my puter, I personally wouldn't have a clue. I just keep getting the insides upgraded when it seems to full or too slow. As for virus checkers, has to be Nortons with AVG good for its price. Didn't like McAffee at all:| supergran (108)

supergran,

I prefer ME over 98SE anyday. Why? Because I never had trouble with ME, yet I had problems (albeit occasionally) with 98SE. There seems to be plenty of people who do not like ME, but I've never managed to get a straight answer out of anyone as to why they tell people to stay away from it. I wouldn't tell you to stay away from either - its more a case of what works for you is probably best for you. I'm running XP Pro now and personally I'd pick that over the other two, but I've also heard others say to stick to 98SE over XP.

There isn't that much difference between 98SE and ME, although there are one or two features in ME that I would have liked in 98SE. So my advice would be to go for whatever you can get for cheapest (from my recent looking around, it seems that ME is the cheaper of the two, if buying new).

Mike.

ok heres a straight answer with an example
ME was a bad attempt at trying new technology, 95 and 98 have stuck around and been there for years, yes they do have their problems but reasonbly easy to fix .

ME hmmm well where to start, this is where microsoft has taken the choice away from the user, eg default options is to automatically update the os while online without telling the user . don't know about anywhere else but i recieved 15 machines one morning that had been left connected overnight . one of the windows update turned out to be a dud and pc's connected at the time it was released got a system shutdown and no reboot, system totally corrupted with no fix available from microsoft, to top it all off microsoft denied the blunder for 48 hrs .

The system restore folder, nice piece of programming for testing as a add on/beta version . this has been fixed in xp however when me was released check out the size on some of those folders and note the avg user can't delete them, so far the biggest i've seen is 20gb, when you have a 40gb hdd thats half your hdd gone .

There is so much to say i could write for hours, these are a coiuple of examples . ok main brand makers like hp, compaq stuck with me cause it was a major expense to remarket the 98 and switch all those mass pc's around the world from me back to 98, this would cost more than the company could handle . do the math, do you think these companies could handle the expense . If you ask custom pc builders eg small based companies building individual pc's by request, 90% of them switched back to 98 as the primary os .

XP used the lessons learnt from ME and fixed the faults . they are even talking voice recognition with the OS now etc . . . . . . .

Overall ME was a lemon with untried principles release before testing was complete to counter the new mac software that was about to be released at the time .
