60327 2002-07-06 10:05:00 small thing to check is that you have turned off any virus protection in the bios. tweak'e (174)
60328 2002-07-06 10:37:00 You can copy the install files to the hard drive and then run the install from there. It may be that the CD is not being detected when it reboots. Marty2001 (421)
60329 2002-07-08 01:59:00 Check IBM's website for updated HDD patch,if you have a Fujitsu HDD.
We run 60 odd 300pl & 300gl's at work and the number of HDD's I've had to replace....sheesh!
Anyway the patch creates a bootdisk which will upgrade the diskthen maybe then will you be able to continue the install past that point.
BTW I would copy the install files to C:\ as has been mentioned above :)

60330 2005-04-19 08:50:00 I have a similar problem with my 300GL.

I am able to get into the BIOS and set the cdrom to boot. I am able to do the first phase of the w98 install. When the machine reboots, and the hardware detection wizard starts, i keep getting the protection fault error. I have the hard drive set to "High Performance" and "IDE PREFETCH". Perhaps these two settings are wrong. Anyway, I'm not sure what to do. Is there a bios update for this box? IBM's website doesn't seem to offer any answers.

I would be most grateful for any help that anyone could provide as I would like to get this box up and running for educational purposes ASAP. Feel free to contact me via email if you like: ckrdbd@donobi.net.

Thank you.

60331 2005-04-19 09:14:00 You shouldn't post your email in a direct way. It is recommended that either you disguise your in the form of words (someone alias domain dot com) or you might want to put your email in binary code form or whatsoever way.

Cheers :)

Turn off the settings and see if it helps. I don't think it will. I presume the scandisk passed? Might pay to do a thorough one - surface scan and see if its ok.

Yes, the scandisk passed ok. The funny thing is that DOS 6.22 installs just fine (from floppies) and also w31 installs fine (also from floppies). Is there some other setting that I need to tweak in BIOS? I wonder if I was able to copy the W98 cd to the hard disk if that would help. Or maybe run setup from within w31.

60334 2005-06-12 18:31:00 Hello Paul,
I am having the same problem with my 300 GL, actually all 4 of the ones I own have this problem. Were you able to solve it yet? And what was your solution?

Thank you,
Kevin
