60176 2002-07-06 00:32:00 I just wanted to say that I enjoy reading the comments and suggestions on the PressF1 site.

When I click an item in the Subject column, I have noticed a larger than normal delay before seeing the next screen. (Probably because I live in Canada!) Then when I click "Back to Topic List", there is another delay. In order to reduce this delay, I use a feature that both IE and Netscape have that will open the link in a new window. Then, after reading the topic's comments, I can close the window, and the original list is there instantly (since it was always sitting in the background). I realize that this will not allow me to see new posts until I refresh the window, but it does noticeably speed-up the processing of scanning each of the topics.

In order to open a link in a new window in IE hold Shift while clicking the link. This works in some of the older version of Netscape too, but in the newer versions of Netscape press CTRL while clicking.

Regards,

Peter Porritt

60177 2002-07-06 04:37:00 Peter, you will find the "Back" arrow in the toollbar works just as well --- it gets the cached version from your disk, which should be less than 12000 miles away from your CPU. ;-) Are you related to Terry? Graham L (2)
60178 2002-07-06 04:59:00 That's actually a trick that I've been using for a very long time, not just with Press F1 but most of the sites that I browse. :-)

Not only do I open the threads in a new window, but while I'm at it I'll often open a dozen at once then disconnect to read them all. That gets the family off my back when they want me to free up the phone line.

If there are posts that I want to reply to I'll type them out in a temporary Notepad window and copy and paste them once I've gone back online again.

I have to admit that this method sometimes backfires when IE protests at the heavy workload and shuts up shop on me, like it tried to do last night with 15 windows open. I've learnt not to click on that "Send an error to Microsoft" but just try and read around the error report window.

Also, it's helpful having my 160mb RAM. :D

60179 2002-07-06 05:18:00 Hi Peter - pleased to see you enjoy the forum and glad to have you onboard from Canada - Yeah i wondered that too? Any relation to Terry who is a regular contributor to this site? I am a bit like Graham i tend to use the 'go back' in the browser as it seems to be faster than clicking 'back to topic list'. I am sure your tips on opening in a new window will come in handy to others who don't use it! :-) I hope the speed thing doesn't put you off returning as a regular as, no doubt there will be times when your contributions will help others in need!!

60180 2002-07-07 02:52:00 Here's what I do with Opera:

1- Open up the index page and wait for it to load
2- Hold down Ctrl-Shift while clicking on the topics I want to read. This will open them in a new window, but in the background ie. the window will open, but under the current one. Can't do that (as far as I know) with IE.
3- click refresh or next page on the index. While that's loading, page 1 has finished and is ready to be read. :)
