60612 2002-07-07 22:45:00 hello, my Genius keyboard is quite new and it has to connect to the computer by the way of a switcher. from the big plug to ps2. and often when i shut down the computer and then start it up again it says Error No Keyboard Present. Usually I can take the ps2 connection out, reset it. then put it back in and then it works after a reset. but this time. i had to get my old keyboard out ( im typin on it now ) that has to still go through switcher but it worked. is there something wrong with my BIOS? i believe it is V 6.00 Bios Guardian i enabled. an all. please help me. this keyboard is extremely sticky that i am typin on ( food )

60613 2002-07-07 22:58:00 It may be a hardware fault with the keyboard, try changing it for another at the store you got it from. Sam H (525)

60616 2002-07-08 00:54:00 Hi BeeeeF

At last, a fellow sufferer!

I use a range of older but high quality keyboards (IBM, Wang, Digital etc)because I like the mechanical key action, and on both Win98 and Win2K computers I occasionally get a keyboard recognition error . Unplugging and replugging the keyboard plus a reboot fixes it (rebooting without unplugging doesn't) and then I will have no problems for days/weeks .

The only cause I have ever located was on my Win98 machine . When that one started to give keyboard errors more often than not, I found the CMOS battery was low and a replacement cured it . If your clock is losing time, check or replace the battery and see if that helps . There is no good reason that I can think of for why this should affect what happens at the instant of power-up, but there you are, it certainly did .

I don't think the ps2 adapter is the problem, there is no logical reaon why a plug-to-plug adapter would do that, so if the battery isn't the answer, try the following sequence and see if it lets the keyboard start up:

Turn the computer off completely, wait a few seconds then switch on again . Immediately after switching on, unplug the keyboard then replug it in again . This action has to be completed before POST looks for the keyboard . It sounds like you are already doing this, but sometimes it has to be done twice and the timing is important . I unplug immediately after switch-on then replug after 2-3 seconds . Too quick and the lockout may continue, too slow and the keyboard isn't detected .

If nothing else helps, you might have to consider the possibility that your keyboard is actually faulty and a warranty replacement is in order!

In my circumstances, I have noted with certain keyboards that when the error notice is present, the keyboard lights for Num, Caps & Scroll Lock are all on and cannot be toggled off . The lockout occurs at the instant of switch-on, well before the POST sequence or any boot activities so I have more or less accepted that it is related to the way in which the power supply boots up and the low voltage rails ramp up .

I am not going to givup my favourite keyboards so if the problem ever becomes annoying I will build a keyboard power-interface box that will delay the supply of power to the keyboard until POST has started .

Cheers

60618 2002-07-08 02:30:00 Hey . . . . . That's great!

It's always good to know when Press F1 scores a hit .

Was it the unplug-reboot routine that fixed it?

Cheers
