60433 2002-07-07 05:28:00 I am running Win98SE with Tweak UI installed and had deselected the arrows on desktop shortcuts. After installing a security update from Windows Update a few weeks back, the shortcut arrows reappeared immediately after the reboot requested to activate the update. Now Tweak UI is unable to remove the arrows. Removing Tweak (using Control Panel/ Add/Remove programmes) and reinstalling has not solved the problem. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Bernie

60434 2002-07-07 05:46:00 Yes, we had this problem a month or two ago. It must be a bug that Microsoft overlooked.
The trick is to extract the file shell32.dll from the Win98SE CD and replace the one that was put into c:\windows\system by the security upgrade.

It may pay you to make a copy of your current shell32.dll and put it somewhere safe for the time being.

Use System File Checker to extract the file for you.

There are no apparent problems caused by this swap, but there's no way of knowing if the security upgrade is affected in any way, as shell32.dll is more than just an icons file.

60435 2002-07-07 06:21:00 Terry, I smell another FAQ...

Your turn! :D

And while I'm at it, I still believe your post candy.idg.co.nz is worthy of the FAQs.

When you have time maybe you'd like to "pick a number" and turn that thread into a FAQ? I'm sure plenty of people will find something in it for them.

Ta! :-)

Perhaps you have the wrong version of TweakUI? There are 2 versions that i'm aware of, 1 is for win9x, and the other is for winxp.

go here and look for it.

you can also find the key to your shortcut.

60438 2002-07-07 20:55:00 Hello Boom, thanks, your suggestions were tried back in March when this problem first arose after the security update was released, but it was eventually tracked to the shell32.dll.

As regards FAQs Susan, I think this one is a real problem that could be worth a FAQ, if someone gives me a number.

I'm not so sure though whether a collection of enhancement tips qualifies at this stage as a FAQ, they aren't answering any problems as such. It needs some thought.

How about #25b? The #25 "Why do my desktop icons keep moving around?" can be renamed to 25a and that way, since they are both about icons, they can be together . Does that sound a good idea?

No, they aren't really answering any problems as such, but I think some good tips like this could go in their own category as Tips rather than FAQs .

Maybe we'll just leave it for now and see what happens later on . The other tips are worth doing though . :-)
