60682 2002-07-08 09:30:00 Goddie. Truth be told I probably don't NEED to go faster. Probably increasing the ram will be all I should do first. As to tweaking the Monster, once I would have given it a go, delved into it's innards & all that. Cannot hack it any more, serious thoughts fight the beta-blockers & makes my hands shake & stuff. Maybe I am trying to upgrade my M/c when it is not neccessary & doing it by adding "Grunt" where I should be using "Brain". Why did Ed climb Everest? because it was there. Maybe this M/c is my mountain. Shaky Poppa John ( I still have my sense of humour if not much else) :^O :^O Poppa John (284)
60683 2002-07-08 09:37:00 Heather P. I am almost "House bound" now, by the end of this year, more so. Remind you of someone over on the other coast? By the end of the year I would like to have as Big & as Best as I can afford, I expect to be spending a lot of time on my XP. Might even be able to make a bob or two somehow eh? Poppa John :) :) Poppa John (284)
60684 2002-07-08 11:16:00 actually i would sell the motherboard first.

reason is that its a kt266 chipset, apart from being so slow, can be troublesome.

i would get either kt266a or kt333.

with 256 meg ram minimum (512 prefered) it will run sweet.

then the cpu upgrade. the XP run faster per clock speed compared to the thunderbirds and are cooler :)

60685 2002-07-08 11:30:00 I'd increase the RAM preferrably to 512MB (but 256 would make a difference) as XP doesn't really like having less than 256MB. RAM is going to increase in price apparently.
A 7200RPM harddrive would be nice as well.

The only thing that going to the XP1800+ is likely to do is help in benchmarks and distributed computing. Could also help to a certain extent in games depending on the video card.

60686 2002-07-08 13:55:00 If you have no problem with the budget. First upgrade ram to either 256 or 512. A 256 DDR RAM is only around $98. Then your second upgrade should be the motherboard. I wouldn't upgrade from kt266 to kt266a, it's just a waste of an upgrade. Rather go straight to kt333. But this will cost you around $220-$270 depending on the brand and the features on the board. I wouldn't upgrade the cpu yet as it still performs good. But if you have extra cash then go with amd xp from 1800+ or above.

60687 2002-07-08 23:28:00 OK I understand all that so far. What is the difference between the kt266 & the kt333 to the one I have now. What features do they have/not have?
Thanks again. Learning Poppa John. :D

60688 2002-07-09 07:18:00 the difference is SPEED. the kt266 is SLOW. also the kt333 uses 333ddr ram 2700. also being a modern board they usually have ata133 and usb 2. tweak'e (174)
60689 2002-07-09 08:26:00 tweak'e. Ok will you enlarge on what you said please. If the kt266 is SLOW, you infer the kt333 is faster? If so by how much? What is 333ddr ram 2700? If the 333 is a MODERN board, what does that say about the 266 board? Finally, what is ata133 & usb 2? Have I got a lot to learn?? & I only have another 10yrs to do it in. ]:) Newbie Poppa John :D :D Poppa John (284)
60690 2002-07-09 09:33:00 the kt266 had a few bugs in it when it first came out and for some reason i hear a few problems with XP processors tho i havn't seen any to confirm. the kt266a is kinda like a bug fixed fixed ver and when they fixed the drivers is a lot quicker than the kt266. the kt333 is like a fine tuned and with the memory bus cranked up to 2x166 (the kt266ahad 2x133) hence the need for 2700ddr ram (yours at present will be 2100)

toms hardware had a good comparision i think.
