60570 2002-07-08 09:45:00 Suggestions - being able to sort by Topic Title, User Name, Date & Time Topic introduced, something like that on Trademe.

A few years back, this was a really good site for learning matters PC. Today there far to many offbeat questions, like "Wet sunday", "And todays Word is". It apears this site is becoming infected with these rubbish type topics.

Thanks for those compiling the FAQ's. Suggestion, edit scroll & save the FAQ, save into Wordpad and save as the FAQ topic.

60571 2002-07-09 01:32:00 Hi John

I'm sorry that you are displeased with the occasional off-topic excursion. It is the friendliness and good humour of the participants that keeps us coming back to Press F1 to read the posts and try to help.

God forbid we ever become one of those forums where everybody calls themselves by weird names like T3Mp[], glutamine83, F**KeMaLL or voicumebunu. (These are all names I just picked up on another "almost reasonable" forum that I occasionally visit.)

With those sorts of names often come cryptic responses only understandable by people who wouldn't have needed to ask the question in the first place, and sometimes unreasonable attitudes to newbie questions. Not always, but often enough to flavour the overall picture and colour the experience.

Let's not pretend here, I'm probably as guilty as anyone of drifting off topic ,and WFTD or WFTWE are my personal babies ]:). I enjoy a bit of moderated lunacy once in a while, it keeps me sane!

I guess since this is a Forum I ought to offer some advice, so I suggest that if off-topic excursions offend you, just don't read them. There are plenty of other posts to get into and offer advice on. Just keep coming back because Press F1 is worth it.

Cheers

60572 2002-07-09 02:33:00 Susan, you can take your pick of meanings 1 or 2. I didn't use a really derogatory word like "celebrity". :D Graham L (2)
60573 2002-07-09 03:54:00 Thanks for that advice Susan B. Am off to try it out now.

Not the cleverest of people but if I follow your instructions, which as usual are pretty easy to follow (how do you do it?) I should manage it.

I never cease to be amazed at what I learn from this page.

We live up in the hills of Te Puke and believe you me we have definitely had enough rain.

As you can see I`m getting quite good with the emoticons

Regards,
Iris

60574 2002-07-09 04:19:00 I support Billy in the matter of variation from the technical.

Without a human aspect (which includes humour) the forum would be daunting to newbies and a cold uninviting environment

60575 2002-07-09 09:30:00 John W, do you play sport or are you involved with any kind of (team) sports?

If you are then surely you would understand that half the attraction of team sports is the socialising aspect of it . For instance, how many people play a game of rugby or golf or tennis and then bugger off home straight after the game instead of hanging around the clubrooms?

Very few, I bet .

The guys who have coached my son's rugby team over the last few years are quite vocal about the fact that Club Night is only every second Saturday . They say it's almost the best part of the whole coaching thing and wish it was every week .

And so the socialising is with us Press F1 regulars . When I first got internet access and Press F1 was a baby I spent a bit of time here, learning and trying to help, but after a while I found another (US) computer forum with excellent help along with a great camaderie amongst its members . Consequently I transferred my interest there instead of PF1 .

At the end of last year I happened to look in on here again and discovered that things had changed a bit . Robo had taken over as moderator and it was now more friendly, less sterile and there were a great bunch of regulars who gave me a good laugh, so I came back .

A few of the wits have left but fortunately most are still here and have been joined by a few more . If you stick around long enough you'll find that a handful of the most knowledgable computer people on this forum are also the funniest (if your sense of humour is as warped as ours, that is) .

You'll also find that the "chat" isn't at the expense of helping people - if someone's post isn't answered it's because no one has an answer . No one gets ignored on purpose . Also, I have found quite often that the chat starts up because it is quiet and there isn't anything to help with .

Anyway, the day these guys are gagged on this forum is the day you don't see me for dust . You know the saying: if you can't beat 'em, you gotta join 'em . :-)

60576 2002-07-09 10:06:00 Oh yea, I'm also pretty verbose.

You see, I get offended when people like yadda yadda yadda ...

60577 2002-07-09 10:48:00 To be honest, I don't like the new forum and didn't like the old one either. Can I recommend that PC World look at some pre-written BBS software such as YaBB? http://www.yabb.info/ I've used it on numerous sites and it seems very scaleable. Thats one problem I have with the existing forum software here - its not scaleable and already it seems that there are too many posts. segfault (655)

Yeah, it was a bit, eh? Sorry about that, I got carried away...

60579 2002-07-09 11:15:00 actualy one of the other forums i frequent(tho its quiet at the mo) was using yabb. unfortunatly it seems the posts are stored as text files and the database keep getting corupt. they had to change it so it now running http://www.ikonboard.com/ don't ask me what the diff is between them but so far it hasn't crashed and is ment to easier to restore if it does (so i'm told). tweak'e (174)
