60443 2002-07-07 03:34:00 Does anyone know of a free application that splits a file into 2 files and joins them again? forrest44 (754)
60444 2002-07-07 03:40:00 There are a number (one is called "split") for DOS. Try Simtel. The easiest way is to use ZIP to produce a "spanned" file (even if it's already a compressed file). Graham L (2)
60445 2002-07-07 04:43:00 There's also a small windows based one with an easy to use gui, that I find useful to have a shortcut to on the desktop:

www.sarasoft.com

Here's what they say about it:

Splitter
Splitter is a small and simple file splitter that offers both convenience and an unbeatable price. Select a file and choose from three available sizes (360K, 720K, and 1.44M) or define your own custom size to quickly perform the operation. Splitter saves the first of the sequentially numbered pieces as an executable that actually contains the complete Splitter program. Double-click on the file, and Splitter jumps into action, ready to reunite the pieces.

(The unbeatable price is free of course.)

60448 2002-07-08 04:24:00 My suggestion of Zip comes from experience. I have used a few split programmes. They are good. They work. But you have to have the programme on the destination machine. All my machines have zip. Even the Linux-only ones can unpack zip files, so they can "unsplit" a file split with Zip. Most people would have WinZip on their Windows machines.

You have to remember to put the programme on one of the disks you are putting the file on, so that it is available when you need it.

60449 2002-07-08 05:37:00 You're generally right Graham, thats why I dont use a dos split/unsplit program much these days, the need to have the program on the destination machine is a pain. The windows one I mentioned though, Splitter from Sarasoft, actually carries the Splitter program in the executable part of the split files, so that the files can be unsplit on any windows machine, and it gives a bonus free Splitter program to the destination machine when the files are unsplit. 60450 2002-07-08 06:45:00 Of course, Zip is clever and overkill but it's pretty universal. I hit a nasty problem with it once upon a time. I discovered "self-extracting". I made an archive file that way. Then I couldn't get it back. :-( It was a bit over 1 MB. It seems that the SFX .exe file had to be loaded into RAM to run. And DOS didn't have that much room. [expletive]. (Of course, you can run pkunzip on a .exe SFX file, but either I didn't know that then, or it hadn't been included in pkzip then) . Graham L (2)
