60885 2002-07-08 22:08:00 At the moment I'm running a 700 Pentium II and want to upgrade my CPU to something faster. My motherboard is a 993AS-L/99AS/993AN PCI/AGP mainboard for Pentium II/III or Socket 370. I have 320 of RAM on board with WIN 98.
I have seen a CELERON 1.3Ghz TUALATIN socket 370 fan incl. for $200.
Is this compatible and a suitable option or should I pay more and stick to a Pentium CPU.?
Will I notice an increase in the speed of my applications?

60886 2002-07-10 04:30:00 If you're not gonna upgrade your montherboard then you'll have to stick with intel cpu. Anyway as for Tualatin I'm not sure if you motherboard supports it. I need to know what is the brand of your motherboard and what model.

As for the upgrade. Tualatin Pentium 3 would be the best option. You will notice the increase in performance for sure. But P3 tualatin is a bit expensive though. Ofcourse you can also upgrade to celeron tualatin but you won't gain much performance. If I were you, i would sell the RAM, motherboard and cpu and save up for new motherboard (socket a), AMD cpu and ddr ram.

60887 2002-07-10 06:37:00 i'll have to check later but you won't be able to run anything over 1ghz. most top out around the 800mhz range (without overclocking).

you will need to check what the bios supports and what voltages the mobo supports. provided the bios supports it a 800mhz p3(must be the 100mhz fsb one) would do nicely. you will need a decent slocket as well with voltage adjustment on it.

60888 2002-07-10 12:18:00 looks like i was wrong. it has a via chipset so it should run the latter 133mhz fsb cpus. there seems to be heaps of bios updates but buggered if i can find where the listing is for the cpus,......bah....jetway 4 ya tweak'e (174)
