2002-07-09 07:19:00 | I am having some errr "difficulty" installing win2k on an AMD duron 650 with 92mb sdram and 4gb hdd and 24x creative CD ROM and an ASUS 1mb video card. During the process of booting into windows for the first time, it starts detecting hardware. It revs up the cd rom and says hello to the empty floppy drive, flickers the screen as it should do then there is a long pause before disk activity then a win2k blue screen saying process halted hardware malfunction cantact your hardware vendor. I have taken out the network card to no avail, and have just taken out the 32mb stick of ram (which is kinda elderly). If this doesn't work i shall try my SIS 4mb video card instead. Any ideas to what the problem may be? Am i taking the correct approach to trying to eliminate the culprit? Brendon ;/

2002-07-09 10:15:00 | I'm using an older motherboard so that won't be the problem. I would get some decent ram and if poss take it up to 256mb. Do a custom install and install the minimum possible. 4gb hard drive is a little on the small side but should still work.. The change in video card should make a difference too.

2002-07-09 10:17:00 | I tried my 4mb SIS card and that did not work. We have tried it on a brand new 20gb 5400rpm drive but to no avail. I'm trying as we speak a 40x ASUS cd rom..... oh yeah did i mention that it has got past the stage where it's converted the drive to NTFS..... and another thing - these bits of hardware are faaaaar superior to one machine we have at skool running win2k - p166 with 64mb of ram Brendon ;/

2002-07-09 10:21:00 | also ram wont really be an issue as it's for M$ word, IE and netscape for my mum to use at work. We really want to install 2k cause of security issues. We think that it'll be ok due to the fact that's got a fastish CPU to make up for ram...if ya know what i mean. *struggles on with a dehydration induced headache* Brendon ;/ (and yes I am drinking lots of water Mother Susan!)

2002-07-09 10:35:00 | We have been using PCI graphics cards until now....we are about to try an AGP card as it has the slot. It's a GeForce 2 MX 400 64mb out of our games machine:( ......willl keep you posted. Brendon ;/

2002-07-09 11:40:00 | Tried the Ge Force 2 card....no good. Also unpluged the USB modem. Took out all the ram and put a a chip that's less than a year old in. (256mb). Am thinking that it's now a glitch in the setup, so am trying it on a slave HDD on my dad's machine. If the same thing happens we will send back the CD and get a replacement. *Wakes himself up* Brendon ;/
