60889 2002-07-08 22:06:00 For some timre I have enthusiasticaly used msn and in that time I cannot get my voice to be heard by the recipient.
It has been set and used to record and play back- perfectly, but send outside? no way!

60890 2002-07-08 22:23:00 This was the subject of a recent posting by SusanB as well.
The advice I gave was to click on the volume control icon in the toolbar, and select options.
Make sure that the "microphone" option is selected, as the volume setting for that device is not shown by default and is often muted.
Unmute and adjust the level
The microphone always works in record mode, strangely enough, with the setting muted.

This worked last time

Also look at all other settings (wave etc) while you are there

60891 2002-07-09 02:02:00 sorry I am late:my one time school boy tutor- now with a degree in computing set all those things exactly as you state last night- - no where can I see how to "send outside"- the mute squares are all clear-
just checked yet again:- volume control =ticked/wave ditto/phone un-ticked/ IIS ditto/microphone ticked/CDAudio ditto/Midi ditto
There does not appear to be any other adjustment available
Recently you were a big factor in correcting another fault in my 'puter, I would be delighted if you do the same again
regards

60892 2002-07-09 02:40:00 As Effie can record & playback perfectly, it would seem her Windows Vol/mixer controls are set correctly, and the msn talk problem may be somewhere else.

Just for the record GF, there's nothing strange about the mic recording ok, when muted in the vol control. Win 95/98 has two mixers. The first one to appear is the 'Play' control with options to mute/unmute inputs. This controls what is heard from the speakers. For talking/recording it is best to 'mute' the mic to avoid acoustic feedback.

There is also a 'Record' control, found in options/properties/. This controls the inputs for talking/recording. In this the required input has to be 'selected'..
It would seem that you & Effie have the mic input 'selected' in the record control. Sorry if you are already aware of this.

60893 2002-07-09 03:02:00 Effiec, you said they were "ticked" - is this a tick in the "mute" box, if so untick them, as a tick here means "disable"

Your problem is identical to SusanB's in that it was only in msn talk that it would not work. Unticked and it came right....

60894 2002-07-09 06:02:00 No! GF the entire window is clear of any ticks effie C (772)

We may be at cross purposes here, and unfortunately I don't have access to Win 98, only XP. Instructions therefore may be slightly different for you - I cannot tell. Also I have never used this feature and never will probably, so can only go on what has worked before for others.

Under volume control - options-properties, select playback mode and every box should be "selected" to show all the options available on the screen "slider controls". Repeat this for "recording" mode

Then you should get all the "slider controls" filling the width of the screen for each mode.
Underneath each slider control there is a "mute" box. Make sure that there is not a tick in these, especially the microphone. Adjust the slider and test.

You may have to mute some later as the other poster points out, to avoid feedback.

This is probably not very clear but its a long time since I had windows 98 and my memory is too short these days...

60896 2002-07-09 07:57:00 More:

And remember to "select" the microphone under the slider control in the "recording" view of all the sliders. Separate from "select"ing it to view the slider. In this view the boxes under all sliders are "select" not "mute"

60897 2002-07-09 08:09:00 At last, I was wondering if you read my earlier post.

All good advice GF, except that for recording/talking programs, it is best to select the mic in record control, but to "mute" the mic in play control, otherwise you will get howling acoustic feedback from the pc speakers.

But you knew that, didn't you?

60898 2002-07-09 08:22:00 "to avoid feedback"....but at least she would know it would be working!!

Its a bit hard when W98 was a dim memory..probably similar in XP (hopes)
