1306329 2012-10-10 20:48:00 My mate was complaining that her laptop was running very slow so she used the Toshiba restore function but said that it was still extremely slow after that so she gave it to me, and I have to agree it is super slow after even doing the restore.
Laptop is a Toshiba Satellite c640 PSC00A-00K00W with 4gb of ram with a pentium dual CPU.
I have already run 2 full mbam scans in safe mode and nothing came up.
Does anyone have any thoughts?

1306330 2012-10-10 21:16:00 Have you run a test on the hard drive? CYaBro (73)
1306331 2012-10-10 21:19:00 I dont think its the HDD, because it runs faster in safe mode, but it has hardly anything loaded on it right now, all that has been installed it AVG, Origin, And Sims 3. nedkelly (9059)
1306332 2012-10-10 21:44:00 You could try PC decrapifier to remove OEM bloatware.

Just what is slow??, slow internet, slow to start, slow to open docs ?

- a re-image didnt fix it so either
- the hard drive is failing: they can go really really slow when they get bad
- they didnt really do a system restore ??
- they did a restore then loaded all sorts of crap back on
- The lappy is doing something in the background, Win updates etc etc
- it may be they are using it on a very slow internet connection (if 'slow' is just slow on the internet)
- they expect the laptop to run faster than it actually can : Some lappies just run like a dog, even when new.

My suggestions:
Do another system restore. Then Uninstall all the crap preinstalled software, especially any anti virus it came with. Install AV later .
Make sure Norton or Mcaffe are completely removed (if applicable)
** do not connect to the internet untill you are happy with its speed in general - then perhaps set windows updates to notify only & then install MSSE AV.

Remove AVG, its bloatware now. I have seen many PC's with AVG running automated scans when PC is being used, that really slows things down(to a crawl)
If the HD is failing, then it could run faster in safe mode. Only way to test that is with a new drive, so thats the last resort option for you.
Chances are its just full of crapware again.
Run msconfig & start by disabling everything (incl non MS services) & see how that runs . Make sure its not connected to the internet when trying to track down cause of speed issues.

That won't be helping.

But I'd still wager it's a hardware issue, probably HDD.

I agree, I would be testing the HDD anyway just to make sure, even if it seems to work OK in Safe Mode.

1306337 2012-10-11 01:48:00 Run tdsskiller on it, rootkits can cause a computer to crawl. I fixed one last night via teamviewer. It had a rootkit on it. It was so slow it wasnt funny. And nothing would open. I had to run tdsskiller in safe mode / networking to kill the rootkit Speedy Gonzales (78)
