1305945 2012-10-09 01:24:00 Hi Guys

I have a friend with a desktop machine with Vista on it.

It is very slow on broadband surfing and Youtube etc

I wonder if I should try to clear out a lot of junk on it

Or would I be better to upgrade it to Windows 7 ?

1305946 2012-10-09 01:26:00 Probably cheaper to clean it out if you can. If you want to save $170 - 200. Post a hijackthis log. And we'll see whats in it. Or get them to install teamviewer on it, and I'll have a look from here Speedy Gonzales (78)
1305947 2012-10-09 01:49:00 try a fresh install of *shudders* vista. Slankydudl (16687)
1305948 2012-10-09 02:14:00 I'd go 7 (if the PC's up to spec). Vista's a wounded dog (just done a fresh install for someone, and the performance is underwhelming).

1305950 2012-10-09 03:47:00 I've just rebuilt grandaughter's Vista. It took ages (read two days) to do as there are soooooo many updates. SP1 wouldn't install until I downloaded the 5 language package from Microsoft. The update version was only 1.9mgs. Go for Win7, way easier! Bryan (147)

Win7. But slow internet is not anything to do with the PC itself. If the PC has bloat and needs a reinstall, then what will be slow is boot and opening programs and so on.

I just finished one, thought it was going to be a bloat problem, esp due to the length of time it's had windows, but no......the HDD was 99% full.
Installed a 500GB (old one was 80GB) , imaged it across as is, and voila, problems have vanished.

Would never have thought about the HDD!
I'll check it out.

1305953 2012-10-09 07:02:00 Is it slow on your ISP or theirs?

Most know that Win 7 is better than Vista

You can put Win 7 on a comp that usually runs XP but it won't be faster
