2012-06-17 23:24:00 | I broke my clothes dryer in the weekend, Having a professional come round this afternoon to fix it but the experience left me feeling the need to vent :badpc: Who the hell designed these? I went to take the back off to clean out the dust etc before hanging it on the wall only to discover the back panel isn't a cover but is in fact a structural part that the main drum is attached to. Once I undid the screws it all fell apart and I can't get it back together. Somewhere in there must be something to tension the belt but it's no longer threaded through it and I can't see it. You also can't access anything because when you try to reassemble it the cover of course fills the whole back leaving nowhere to get a hand in. Clearly they are not designed to be easily serviced. :waughh:

2012-06-17 23:29:00 | The door fell off our front-vent dryer last week. Crappy plastic-over-metal hinges that cracked away due to the force required to get the lint filter off. Luckily it was still under warranty. | Renegade (16270) | |
2012-06-18 00:43:00 | Ours broke as well. Piece of crap. I think they must have been designed by the people who repair them. | Nick G (16709) | |
2012-06-18 01:22:00 | My dryer (Leonard) is now 33 years old. Son broke the door once (round plastic), was moving it and it swung open and caught the wall, ripped it off. Repaired with a screw and araldite. It squeaks when it dries now, has done for about the last 7 years. Brilliant piece of machinery. I vacuum it, you can get in there a fair bit with the foot part removed.

2012-06-18 01:36:00 | do you give all your appliances male names pctek? :) Leonard is a Fisher and Paykel brand name ! Our F&P model 405 dryer with external vent was bought second hand also around 33 years ago when I extended the kitchen and laundery. It is still going as well as ever. Edit: never been able to understand the logic of driers that exhaust wet air into the living space, no wonder there is a market for de-humidifiers and the crap "HRV" systems.

2012-06-18 01:43:00 | My dryer (Leonard) is now 33 years old. My F&P is even older, still working perfectly. Its all metal :) They could still easily make dryers that last 30 years, but no one would want to pay those $$$ if they could buy a plastic one for $300 :punk

2012-06-18 02:52:00 | Oh yes, my problems are totally self inflicted and I learnt my lesson. I won't pull another dryer apart. It's the first time on any device I've ever looked at where just undoing the screws on the back cover totally wrecked it's function and it can't be easily put back. I think it's a horrible design, generally I am competant enough to do a bit of DIY maintenance and able to back out and leave it to the experts when it's too complex. From now on Dryers are on my list of things I won't attempt.

2012-06-18 03:42:00 | Years ago I was quoted $120 for a new indicator switch and I decided to fix it. Well it took me about thirty goes to get it back together. It had two rockers, two springs and two ball bearings. | mikebartnz (21) | |
