Now we might spend a bit more cos we have like a fish for a family of four (me as the mature child :p and it saves the rent) as a weekly thing but we have a lot of mince and stirfrys, haven't had a steak in probably over 3 months, monthly we may have chicken wings thou. But previously when I was cooking for myself, won't mention prices cos that is bound to have changed but a packet of mince did last me for 4 dinners. Didn't buy much pizzas or fast food or muffins etc.

I know that now, I spend maybe $15 for breakie per week. Junk food, steaks/fillets pushes up the bill considerably incl orange juice, biscuits and coffee. Nowadays I make 2 cups off a single tea bag.

1282057 2012-06-16 08:59:00 2 cups from one bag? Are things really that tight? My fish comes from the fish and chip shop once a week, don't do chicken unless I'm forced too. It's all beef for me, with a touch of lamb and pork. If it doesn't have four legs, it's not meat. plod (107)
1282058 2012-06-16 09:09:00 Damn, I am eating all the wrong stuff. Bobh (5192)
1282059 2012-06-16 09:14:00 I used to get 1 cup from a bag, but someone said it was wasteful so I started having 2 . Normally have them in the same sitting session . But I have the earl grey stuff . We don't drink together much so haven't used a teapot .

But I dunno aye . Thru a homestay yrs ago, there was this family who always had red meat in terms of steak or chicken thighs, it was always some boiled/stirfry veges and a piece of meat and then it was always ice cream for dessert . Maybe they weren't good in the kitchen, we never actually had mince . Not even spaghetti bouggnaise (sp) .

I know that if I were to move out, I could get it down to $60/week for the food ex . the occasional eat out ie . , work lunch . But if one has a piece of meat every night that could get expensive than using cheaper cuts and produce food that has a lot more sauce and saok that up with rice/pasta or bread and/or eggs . That's a good filler .

1282060 2012-06-16 21:25:00 Well my weekly shopping bill averages about $70.
We have had this week:

1 Pineapple
8 Oranges
10 Bananas
Homemade bacon bone soup - lots of veges, some frozen, in it
Husband has had Cottage pie, I have had vege pasta
Pork roast (bought at $3.99kg) and roast veges
And a whole lot of leftover pork made into stirfry and pasta dishes, some of which are in the freezer
Pork and mustard sammies (heated up the pork)
4 muffins
Toast

Apart from the roast it's pretty typical, I make nearly everything from scratch, meat is bought in bulk when cheap and frozen,
garden provides most veges and herbs, some fruit, not so much now it's winter, my orange tree is only little...

I did participate one day this week, in the buy lunch thing they do every day at work, each day it is a different place - one colleague owed me $5 so I waited until KFC day and got a $5 lunch. Coleslaw and a burger.

Can't say I liked the burger much, it was OK, just rather pitiful, lettuce and a crumbed piece of chicken and nothing else. Lame. Back to making lunch...cheaper and I make better lunches.

How do you fare in winter with this? Ours have stopped growing now, we are in Welly. And re: tomatoes, we grew them, but the issue was by the time the plant died away the tomatoes were still small and green. What could be the reason  We did use new compost, bones, blood, tomato feed.

Yes, we Welly doesn't really go to the fast food places but yah ... things like nice coffees gets expensive really quick and they are just not the same as filter coffee.

Have started planting lettuce seeds indoors thou.

1282063 2012-06-16 22:49:00 Pfft, all their comparisons were based on fat and sugar. --Wolf-- (128)
1282064 2012-06-16 22:50:00 We put all of our surplus veg in the other freezer, should get us through most of the winter, and we also buy any veg that is on special when we see it and also freeze it.

Tomatoes we had them come up on their own, we picked them when it turned cold and put them on the window sill green after a few days they go red. Our garden is dormant now just have leeks in that we are eating, will start planting August- September down here and then under cloche's
