1306339 2012-10-15 21:29:00 Ok tdsskiller did not find anything.
If it was the HDD what would be the best program to test it with that can run from a boot cd?
nedkelly (9059)
1306340 2012-10-16 00:00:00 They don't have a boot cd but try the free version of HDTune and also CrystalDiskInfo.
Run CrystalDiskInfo first as that will tell you if there are any SMART failures then use HDTune to run a surface test.

Dont rely on 'smart' for HD health .
Some HD faults wont show in the usual tests.
If they are bad enough for test suits to detect faults, they are often obviously faulty anyway.
eg: HD running slow due to faults can pass most tests (Ive seen this)
Best test is to clone to a new HD & see if that fixes the issue.

Or just re-image/reload Win, start again with a fresh install. Else its really your time being wasted.
You really dont know wants been through that install of win, you could spend days trying to track down elusive
issues.

Also make sure the CPU is actually running at full speed. Some lappies CPU's get stuck in power save mode & run at 1/2 speed or less.

1306343 2012-10-17 21:42:00 ARH!!!! Stupid stupid laptop. Says that it needs a driver for the dvd drive to install. Ive just spent 45 minutes trawling through google to find that the driver does not exist.
And it wont boot my USB iso for Windows 7 either. I hate Windows laptops.

Driver for the dvd drive???!!!!
Never seen that one before and I've installed Windows on tons of different model laptops.
You sure it's not looking for the SATA AHCI driver so it can see the HDD?

1306347 2012-10-18 03:06:00 A little inconvenient perhaps, but maybe setting the controller to IDE mode in the BIOS will allow windows to be installed. If you need to get AHCI mode working afterwards it's doable with a little bit of registry tweaking, plenty of guides about for that. Or you could just leave it in IDE mode. dugimodo (138)
1306348 2012-10-18 03:47:00 Hmm I wonder if it is AHCI.
Im going to disable it tonight ans try again.
