If I save up equivalent of ten years NZ Super does "means test" require that I get no NZ Super for 10 years and only then transfer to NZ Super? So all that lifetime saving would mean I get no extra benefit from having saved! One may as well squander all one's savings at 64 with a world tour! It is very difficult to live off the pension when you have numerous rising costs for rates, water, health etc. (NZ Super doesn't take into account personal circumstances.) The means test would increase the number of work-arounds - family trusts etc as well as a "spend it before you are assessed" mentality. |

So the Govt is asking New Zealanders that have already paid decades of taxes to support those on the benefit system to work longer and pay taxes for longer in order to support (some) immigrants that come here to retire knowing very well that they could not have done the same in their countries of birth - India and China come to mind as we do not have a reciprocal agreement with them. I tell you the full story of the pension, and believe me I KNOW. The 10 years residency in order to qualify for NS is but a requirement, and if the person asking for NS does not meet that requirement then they get granted the Emergency Benefit until they do. It's crazy. Gotta love the Aussies and their no-nonsense approach to these things. |

There was always heated debate between that pair. There was a lady speaker who kept order like a strict school ma'am. |
