1306105 2012-10-09 18:45:00 Looking for a temperature application to monitor CPU / GPU temps. Relates to this post: pressf1.pcworld.co.nz
The Zalman has a speed controller, and I want to run this as low as possible but don't want to cook the GPU
OS is Windows 7

Free please

(incidentally - what sort of temps should a non-gaming CPU / GPU get to? The computer is used for video encoding)

CPU is Athlon X3
Graphix card is Quadro FX 3450

1306106 2012-10-09 18:50:00 try realtemp or speedfan, probably speedfan if you want to see gpu temps.

anything under 70 at full load is ok, lower the better of course.

1306108 2012-10-10 01:22:00 I like SpeedFan. Does good analysis of HDD SMART too. Agent_24 (57)
1306109 2012-10-10 01:29:00 I personally just keep Speccy open on a second monitor :)

I agree, 70 is a good number. Anything too much hotter and you'll undoubtedly be shortening the life of the card unnecessarily.

1306110 2012-10-10 01:48:00 Not to flog a dead horse again (I've brought up my SLI woes a few times now), but back when I tried SLI with 2x GTX460s the top card was hitting 90+ under furmark and well into the 80s with some games and it actually was running perfectly fine. I just couldn't live with the noise and the suspicion that something was going to melt.

Most CPU/GPUs are able to handle 90-99 C and just either throttle themselves back or trigger a power shutdown (immediate power off not a windows shutdown) when approaching that limit. Some cards start throttling at lower temps.

Still the reason I said 70 is I consider that a good safe limit without undue component stress, some compact systems or machines with poor airflow can exceeed that and still be ok. If I had a CPU that got to 75 and everything checked out ok I could live with it.

1306111 2012-10-10 07:24:00 Thanks all. Had a look at them... decided Speccy was the one for me :) Myth (110)
