61241 2002-07-10 06:38:00 I've just searched the PC World website for information about RAM upgrades and found Stan Miastkowski's useful "Bulk up your PC's RAM" article (29 Jan 2002).

He makes the comment that for a low-cost, potentially dramatic boost to
your system's performance, nothing beats adding memory. This has always been my understanding and I had this in mind when I ordered a new PC today.

I'm getting a P4 2.2 GHz which comes with 256 of DDR PC 266 RAM as
standard. I intended upping this to 1 GB of RAM but was advised by the
sales consultant to only upgrade to 512 MB of RAM unless I really needed 1 GB of RAM "because the additional RAM overhead could actually slow down the machine."

I always thought you could never have too much RAM so would be very
interested to hear Stan or someone else's view on this.

61242 2002-07-10 07:00:00 Well think how you can justify 1gb of ram (And its DDR ram too!) I still have 128 in my Duron 1ghz and it still works extremely well. Unless you are doing some 3d animation with a quadrillion rendered polygons or something, you should be alright with 512 or even 256. You might regret it later if the ram prices come down to the crazy prices of sd ram a couple of months ago.

Doesn't it seem funny that the sales consultant was actually advising against buying something? :)

61243 2002-07-10 07:34:00 it depends on which os a bit but usually the limiting factor is the motherboard. theres no great problem with going to a gig of ram but the performance gained would be minimal. win98se with 512ddr runs sweet, 128 is just so slow. tweak'e (174)
61244 2002-07-10 08:49:00 Win9x will not utilise any more than 512MB.

Also when you have more than 512MB there can be a slight slow down in performance as more errors will occur. So if having more than 512MB it is recommended to have registered RAM.

win95 can adrress up to 1.5gig of memory. practically however 1gig for win9x/me and god knows the limit for 2k/xp.

I stand (sit?) corrected then .

I'd just heard that from what is (usually) a very good source of truthful and accurate information .

ms article-

Windows 95 Can Access Up to Two GB of RAM

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft Windows 95

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
If you install more than two gigabytes (GB) of memory (RAM) in your computer, you may be able to use only two GB of RAM in Windows 95 .

CAUSE
Although Windows 95 has the ability to address up to four GB of virtual memory, it can access and use only two GB or less of physical RAM .

Additional query words: 2GB 4GB 2 4 64 limit maximum

61248 2002-07-11 05:30:00 Comes of using 32 bit integers. Maximum and minumum numbers are +/- 2GB (-1). This has caused a certain amount of bother with accessing big disks. (expecially in pogrammes and installation ). Graham L (2)
61249 2002-07-12 07:04:00 Hello :)

Windows 95 can handle 1gig of RAM - but it will only activily use up to 64mb. The rest will be used, but not really, if you know what I mean?? ;)
