61664 2002-07-11 10:38:00 Help anyone, although this problem is not major it is annoying.
I had recently installed Office 2k on a Windows XP computer and a small game. it usually shuts down at a decent speed but now after playing the game or doing some major work in windows. it takes a long time to get into the saving your settings screen or a long time to power down.
is this a problem with CPU only 300mhz or is this a software fault.
Any suggestions appreciated

61665 2002-07-11 14:30:00 I don't think office 2k and the game are causing the slow shutdown. Do you have a virus scanner installed? or some other new software you installed before this happens? anyway you can view the services that are being run and stuff, from there you mite be able to work out what's being run during the shutdown stage.

This is the tweak that WORKS.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
WaitToKillAppTimeout = 20000 (default)
change the value to 200

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l
WaitToKillServiceTimeout = 20000 (dafault)
change the value to 200

And 1 more tip.

Use shutdown.exe to shut down your pc.

Create a batch file that looks like this.

c:\windows\system32\shutdown.exe -s -t 00 -f

-s = shutdown
-t 00 = set timeout to shut down
-f = force running apps to close without warning.

once you have your batch file, place it on your desktop or put it in your start menu or watever, then assign a short cut key to it, or just execute it from your desktop.

With the registry tweak + the batch file short cut, your shutdown should be faster.

Same goes for fast restart. Create batch file looks like below
c:\windows\system32\shutdown.exe -r -t 00 -f

-r = restart
