61611 2002-07-11 09:35:00 I personally would have a look around as I've seen cheaper prices than that.

Depending on brands.

61612 2002-07-11 09:36:00 Any GeForce card with the prefix of MX in front of it means it's a budget version of the standard Gforce card which usually have the prefix of TI.

My preference would be the GeForce MX440. I don't think you'd go to far wrong with that. It'll certainly keep the kids happy, and any money you've got left over can be used for the crowbar you'll need to pry them away from the screen. :D

61613 2002-07-11 09:55:00 i think u need to work out what hardware you have. can't see why they quote agp video cards if you have a pci vid card.

if agp i would go for a geforce3ti200. it should be at the top end of your price range.

61614 2002-07-11 11:32:00 for $354.38 you can get a Leadtek: Geforce 4 Ti: Leadtek Nvidia GeForce 4 Ti 4200 with TV-Out & DVI Out 64 MB 4ns from Starlyte (http://www.starlyte.co.nz) -=JM=- (16)
61615 2002-07-11 12:00:00 The price of the GF2 is a bit high, I got a Asus geforce2 mx 400 64mb (no tv out) for $150 at a local place.

Even with only a PII-400 I got 60-70fps in Quake III HighQuality 800x600 and 25-30fps at 1024x768.

I would just get the GF2 and save getting a better card until your next upgrade.

61616 2002-07-11 21:34:00 There isn't much point getting a GF2 unless you are only paying $150 or so . If you are comparing prices between GF2 and GF4 and the difference (as seen above) is really only a few bucks, don't bother with the GF2 .

Having said that, I run a GF2 and it is fine - it will certainly handle Quake III . But if future proofing is your concern, thent he GF4s make more sense . The kids are only going to go out and buy something like Doom III when it arrives and then they'll start pestering you for a better video card .

There is an argument which says, given that Quake III is all you are currently concerned about, that it might be an idea to spend $150 now on some flavour of GF2 (shop around, they really are going cheap now) and wait a while before buying a GF4 . By the time you need one (Doom III again . . . ), they will have dropped enough in price that you culd pick up a better one at the $300 price range than you can currently get . I've held off buying a new card for a while now, waiting for prices to drop, and the GF2 has kept me satisfied .

61617 2002-07-11 23:34:00 If you're looking for the lowest onlice prices in NZ, check out www.pricespy.co.nz - it lists *heaps* of computer components, checking just about all (I think) online shops, comparing prices.

61618 2002-07-11 23:44:00 sorry bruce but the gf4mx's will not be able to play the likes of doom 3.
only real video cards need apply ;-)

any video card will be better than those s3 trio crappula vid cards.

61619 2002-07-11 23:51:00 They'll play it - just not to full effect. Better than a GF2. I figure sh'es not in the market for a $1000 plus card :-) Biggles (121)
61620 2002-07-11 23:57:00 don't count on it. according to one of the press releases (montys news had it long time back) the minimum will be a gf3. i think its due to the game useing the extra parts of the gpu (tranform & lightning??) that the g4mx dosn't have.

i'll see if i can dig out the press release on it.
