61743 2002-07-11 16:32:00 Like most of us i get more spam than i want. I wish they'd stop sending me it.
Then i got one that opened an IE browser window. My default browser is Opera, so that i find particularly annoying
It used the following code:
<html><body onload="open('202.103.180.121:81)
which opens up a webpage about anti obesity drugs, which of course has several unbelievable claims

What can i do to stop this e-mail from opening this page, and stop inevitable future spam with this trick built into them from working?

Was this from an email? What email handler do you use? you might perhaps be able to set your email handler to not display HTML emails, therefore not running any popup scripts like this one.

61745 2002-07-11 23:34:00 sorry...
I am using OE6 on a win 98se system.
As for not displaying html mail, i so hope that i dont have to resort to that!

61746 2002-07-11 23:48:00 Hey Chris, you can disable scripting that should stop that kind of thing happening.

Check out the Spam FAQ for details.

61750 2002-07-12 01:33:00 OK OK,
Susan & Mike,
i'm almost awake, have found the FAQ, read it.
It contains excellent advice on how to avoid spam, how to auto delete spam, what not to do, such as not replying to/bouncing spam. I already do all of the above, i even open anything that looks spamish in offline mode, so that no images are downloaded from some server somewhere thus confirming that spam has been received.
Unfortunately i don't see anything about how to stop the spam that still gets through from opening a popup before i even realize it is spam
spam spam spam........

Bruce, if you happen to read this, could you PLEASE add the word "spam" to the spellchecks database of real words!!!!

61751 2002-07-12 02:18:00 Oops, sorry Chris, the script thing is in my other FAQ "How do I get rid of an unwanted home page". Here you are, you can use the bucket of cold water now...

These are the relevant bits:

STEP SEVEN: Protect your PC
To further protect your computer from unscrupulous websites do the following:

1. Disable Windows Scripting Host by installing noscript.exe from Symantec (www.sarc.com). This is a very convenient, one click tool for disabling or enabling the Windows Scripting Host, a very exploitable tool used by worms and sleazy operators to make bad things happen on your PC. It is not at all required for normal Windows functions.

2. Make sure "Install on demand" is unchecked in Internet Explorer's Tools|Internet Options|Advanced.

3. Go to Internet Options|Security|Internet|Custom level, and for all ActiveX options that are currently set to 'enable' change them to 'prompt'.

HTH!

61752 2002-07-12 10:41:00 Having changed a couple of the settings, i now get This (www.something.net.nz) rather than a bloody webpage telling me i'm too fat and need drugs.

Much better!

Thanx All
