61648 2002-07-11 08:47:00 I am using XP Pro on a PII 350 with 128 MB RAM. Start up (from switch on to completion of Desktop load) takes abour 3-3.5 minutes, while close down can take up to 4 minutes. Is this just a case of my old hardware not coping too well, or is there a way to speed things up. I have only five apps loading automatically on start up. Most of the time appears to elapse during the load from the welcome screen to the desktop and vice versa on close down.

61649 2002-07-11 09:40:00 You are close to the Minimum System Requirements for Windows XP
It could well be that you're going as fast as you can.
Even 5 aps starting on top of that will degrade the performance noticeably.
Apart from start up and shut down what's the performance like?

61650 2002-07-12 08:56:00 In the main, very good, it handles standard office apps with no problems, and rarely misses a beat with the more memory/processing intensive graphics, audio, video, games apps. Only real hassle is start and close times. Harry (854)
61651 2002-07-14 04:42:00 If you go to:
Start/Run and type msconfig the Startup tab will show all applications that are initiated at Startup.
You may find a few hiding that you aren't aware of.
Be on the lookout for programs that may be chewing a lot of resources.
