62057 2002-07-13 04:19:00 Help.
Have just taken in an asian studen border for 5 months.
Was at work last week, and the student was at home with my son.
Son said student was placing a disk in my a drive and accessing the internet.

Put a password on at ME startup, and password on screensaver.
Was at work yesterday, student had a friend over.
When I came home a connected to internet, connection box came up, (usually remembers password and connects).
Had a differenct user name.

Obviously (hopefully) they tried to connect and couldn't because when they changed the user, my password dropped off.
Will leave it as needing the password to be entered to connect.

My question is this,

How can I be sure when I leave home, (kid will normally be at school)
that he and his friends, don't or can't crack - hack my computer.

Concerned mum in learning.

62058 2002-07-13 04:33:00 The unfortunate thing is that there is no such thing as a secure computer. If someone can get at the box, they can beat any software security system. :_|

There is no security in Win ME. :-(

You can probably set a password in the BIOS. That will give some protection. That can be beaten, but it means opening the box. The only way to "stop" access is a locked door, and the cynical view is that all a lock does is "slow down honest people". ;-)

It's probably a good idea to set the BIOS so that it does not try to boot from floppies --- to help your AV.

I think the real solution is likely to be "rational discussion" with the student. If that is possible.
