62089 2002-07-14 06:13:00 tweak'e,
i was thinking of ditching the vidcard, i dont need anything to fancy, not being a gamer. I could use the old one in the server that waits pataintly for me to find the final componant for it.
Of course this probably has nothing to do with the benQ (non)CD writer saga
DMA???
could point.... i'll just go check.

62090 2002-07-14 06:25:00 the reason i mention the s3 video card is they are known to cause a performance drop which can be enough to cause problems. tweak'e (174)
62091 2002-07-14 06:25:00 tweak'e
the nearest thing i could find in the BIOS is the 4 "UDMA - Auto" settings
i assume that means DMA is enabled on all drives.

62092 2002-07-14 06:29:00 Just as a side issue, the s3 proformance problem, is that under doze, linux, or both?
if i do ditch the card from the doze box, i had hoped it would be usefull as the final componant on the linux box to be.

62093 2002-07-14 06:36:00 if u use windows dma is in device manager under cd and hardrive.

62094 2002-07-14 11:20:00 I have to agree with Alan on this one.

The easiest way to find out the problem is to get them to test it ,you could also try it on someone elses pc ,if it works ok, then you know where the problem lies.....

and to answer your question BOOM23 ,Yes, I have a Benq burner and have burnt about 200 cd,s or more, with few problems.I find that if I try to burn a disc with lots of sessions, its more likely to end up with errors on it than if I burn it all at once, other than that it has been trouble free.

62095 2002-07-14 11:34:00 Bear in mind that the original burner, which has now been sent back to the manufacturer, DID work fine and dandy for more than a few burns...
the replacement wont work at all, the software package that came with it sees no burner, but kindly set up a virtual cd recorder..... well a fat lot of use that is, virtual backups, virtual audio cd's, yes, that would be useful!
the replacement also came unpackaged, so one can assume it was one that someone elses machine hated too!

Unless my machines and/or its P/S is doing some kind of rapid demise, i have to assume that the second burner, is totally faulty.

tech_mister,
I am glad to hear that someone has a good benQ, by the sounds of it, you may be in an elete group!

62096 2002-07-14 13:05:00 Hello again Chris,
From what you are now telling us, the problem with the new drive is probably software related, alot of software needs updating before it will see the latest drives.
This seems to be exactly what your problem is, go to the software makers website and download the CDRW database or file for your writer, some software needs individual updates some just use one database file.
If your PC sees the CDRW in device manager and you see it in Windows explorer but your Writing software does not recognise it, the above is always the cause.

62097 2002-07-14 13:12:00 Ok Alan,
I've never been one to give up while there appears to be hope, i'm just about to pop the CDRW back in the hole, and see if i can get it to work.
it did of course come with installation software, but i shall see if that can be improved upon.
will post the result...

62098 2002-07-14 14:12:00 no drivers as such on the benq site, it did offer a firmware upgrade, did that...
firmware upgrade successful.
CD writer still dead...
i'm too tired for this.. i think i'll go play with power tools for a while
