2002-07-13 13:47:00 | Alan, Both my HD's are ½ full, C is a 20gig drive, D: is a 40gig, so there is no shortage of space on the disk for nero to write the image file before burning the disk. Anyway, as part of the experiments, i tried burning .iso files i had d/loaded, specifically redhat linux, the results were just the same, believe me, i went through all the likely options, switched off everything, went offline, tried burning at really low speeds, (see screenshots) none would work The first burner worked well, i was pleasantly surprised to get 40+ disks with only one problem. It worked nomatter what else i was doing, till it didn't anymore. Once it made up it's mind not to go, it wouldn't, nomatter what i did or didn't have running as well. When i was trying to reincarnate the burner i rebooted before tests, just to make sure. The second burner just wouldn't work as a burner. Period. There is a possiblity that there is something else running that somehow is in conflict.... but my instints tell me this is not too likely

2002-07-13 22:36:00 | Hi Chris, What size power supply unit do you have, Cd Writing failure often shows up an inadequate or failing PSU, a good PSU would be critical to your machine as it is running also as a server, it is just possible that the amount of load you put on your PSU while burning a large number of CD's in a short period of time has weakened it. Funnily enough, is there a coincidence here, the amount of people complaining about their PC Company burners, we all know one of the main problems with PC Company units is an inadequate PSU ( even though the PC Company runs against nearly all other recommendations and insists that it isn't) Alan

2002-07-13 22:49:00 | I use Roxio software and LG CDRW and can burn without shutting anything down! :D | cadifan (286) | |
2002-07-13 23:31:00 | <sigh> I bought a similar writer 3 months ago. I run an MMX233, 10GB (30% full), 192MB, W98SE. I haven't used it as extensively as you have but the ones I did burn, I was quite happy with - no coasters yet !!! From what I am reading, it seems that the issue goes beyond underruns as people are able to burn CDs no matter how apps loaded the session is. Anybody thought about the laser itself?

2002-07-14 00:54:00 | Alan, to be honest i'm not sure what size power supply i have! its a LC-235ATX cadifan, i too could burn without shutting anything down, but this is a practice that is asking for it, so i shutdown what i wasn't using, just to be "sure" when it worked it worked, when it didn't it didn't. The amount of other apps running seemed to make no difference. Tom, i'm running win98se too, 256 ram, 450 meg P1 hopefully you'll still be happy once you've done your first 40+CDs i suggest if you feel like backing your HD(s), do it before the warrantee runs out!

2002-07-14 00:56:00 | Alan, The power supply thing is a good point, i find it odd that there was nothing on the box to suggest that any particular power supply size be considered minimal!

2002-07-14 01:14:00 | Back again. And i still wanna say benQ writers are rubbish. I have tried 4 different burning software (installed 1 at a time, but it doesn't matter anyway) and sometimes it failed to burn. The PSU shouldn't be a problem since I'm on 350 watts PSU. I'm also on a fast system with 256 mb ram. Burning cd's while online/offline or with a lot of apps on doesn't really make any difference as long as your system is fast enough and can handle. Anyway benQ just failed. I wouldn't blame the software either, most of my friends use nero but they all have different brands of burners. None failed apart from benQ. I have done a lot of diagnostics but the hardware just not reliable | boom23 (176) | |
2002-07-14 01:15:00 | Well that would be a 235Watt power supply. | -=JM=- (16) | |
2002-07-14 01:32:00 | Have you got Microsoft Find Fast off - Its an Auto indexing file system thing which comes with MS Office. I installed MS Office and all my CD skipped before I figured it out. Go to >Control Panel> Find Fast to turn it off.

2002-07-14 01:46:00 | So maybe Benq's need more than whats left of 235w after what the rest of the system has taken? Maybe the laser has failed on the second unit, I assume it is a differant laser that writes to that which reads? Maybe benq's just have a very limited life? Definatly i should just take it back, and try for a diiferant brand!
