62827 2002-07-15 10:03:00 Icrontic have posted up a DVD Ripping Guide using nine programs you can download. The guide is designed to teach you how to rip and compress a DVD into the DivX 5.02 standard and have two audio streams (main stream and Directors comments) built into the one .avi file. Here's a clip from the guide and a list of the programs and download links:
"In this example we are going to rip an episode from a series and convert it to DivX5.02, what’s special about this particular rip is that we are going to add streaming Directors comments as well as the usual audio track (2 audio tracks – injected into one avi file). I felt a program like EasyDivx was not going to give me anywhere near acceptable quality and anyway, it just doesn’t give you enough features. I decided on using roughly ten programs to compile and complete the process properly."
1) Smart Ripper (www.dawnload.net)
2) DVD2AVI (arbor.ee.ntu.edu.tw)
3) VFAPI Reader (www.divx-digest.com)
4) Birate Calculator (www.divx-digest.com)
5) DivX 5.02 Codec (www.divx.com)
6) Virtual Dub (www.virtualdub.org)
7) NanDub (http://www.nandub.org/)
8) SUB rip (membres.lycos.fr)
9) BS Player (www.bsplayer.org)

Intel has started shipping its Itanium 2 to OEM manufacturers. The Itanium 2 processor family comes in three models, the 900MHz CPU with 1.5MB L3 cache, 1GHz CPU with 1.5GHz L3 cache and 1GHz CPU with 3MB L3 cache. You can expect the first systems based on Itanium 2 to start appearing this quarter and later in the year some OEMs are planning to introduce Hi-Po systems including from 8 up to 64 Itanium 2 processors.
A new Bois has been released for the MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU version 5.5 motherboard. Grab it here (download.msi.com.tw).
TvTool has posted up an article comparing the TV chips found on some video cards. Here's a clip:
When looking for a new graphics card more and more people take the TV chip into consideration which should be used on the card. In graphics cards comparisons in PC journals you can find the type of TV chip in the specifications more frequently. A very nice trend as the chips have significant differences. So it's time to throw a little light on this matter!
You can have a read of the whole article at TvTool (tvtool.info).
The Inquirer is reporting that the new nForce 2 chipset to be announced next week has claimed a 20% speed advantage over VIA's DDR 400 chipsets of around 20 per cent, according to information from a Taiwanese motherboard manufacturer. here's part of the report:
The Nforce2 will support dual DDR memory, 64-bit and 128-bit buses, and 266, 333 and 400 flavours of the memory type. There will apparently be support for asynchronous FSB clocks and memory clocks, an AGP 8X interface, and Hypertransport support at 800MB/s.
Read the rest of the report here (www.theinquirer.net).
Here's a warning for owners of the MSI K7N420 nForce Board. The latest 2.5 BIOS file is apparently bad due to some changes in the RAM timings causing some people not being able to load the high performance defaults plus the BIOS has also killed some so they don't boot at all. Read more here (www.msi.com.tw).

Microsoft has posted a page listing all the Windows XP SP1 Updates And Fixes with corresponding links to the the Knowledgebase article. Have a look here (support.microsoft.com ows%2Fxp%2Fpre%2Dsp1%5Fhotfixes%2Easp).
ASUS have put out yet another release of its PCProbe program. This version is 2.17.02 with no list on what's changed. Grab it here (ftp://ftp.asuscom.de/pub/ASUSCOM/UTIL/PC_Probe/probe21702.zip).
PC-Extreme (www.pc-extreme.com) have been busy at work running up a performance comparison test using 3DMark2001 SE build 330, Comanche4, Serious Sam 2, Jedi Outcast and Quake III and the newly leaked nVidia Detonator 30.30 drivers against the Detonator driver sets 29.80 The test shows that the new leaked drivers are faster but still fall slightly behind the 29.42 drivers. Read the comparo here (www.pc-extreme.com) but beware you may need to you the ol Altavista Babel Fish as it is in german.
