62524 2002-07-14 23:24:00 Hi all
I am running Windows 98 se and for some reason the windows update icon is missing from my start menu and from the accesseries menu in system tools.
I have recently done a full format and clean reinstall of the operating system and this happened after that.
What would be the best way to get these back as i have gone to windowsupdate.com and have been locked out due to error messages.
I have tried to replace the .dll files that they say might have been missing and played with the security settings to try to get this to work.
Anyone got any answers ?
Cheers

62525 2002-07-15 11:21:00 Have you checked whether you have the update program, wupdmgr.exe in your c:\windows folder?

If so then you could add it to your start menu programs by right clicking on the task bar-properties-start menu programs-add.

I didnt think it was meant to be in System Tools anyway.

I dont know why you have been locked out of the MS update site, but I think you have to allow cookies.

i tried that and it told me that i had disabled windows update as the administrator.
Not sure how i did that.
I'm running 2 PCs through a crossover cable network.
Could that have something to do with it .
Do you know how to enable it again?

62527 2002-07-15 23:43:00 Dont think I'm able to help Warren, not into networking.

I think you possibly meant that the Update was also not available from IE-Tools.

There is a knowledge base site which doesnt seem to be any help regarding this problem when networking, you've probably already seen it.

support.microsoft.com

and also this one that could be worth browsing through
www.webtree.ca

hope there isnt a word wrap problem with that, you may have to edit the URL to remove %20 in links if you copy and paste.

62529 2002-07-16 06:06:00 According to this site, about half-way down the page, if you are on a network, you need to contact your System Administrator to get the windows Update installed :) :)

www.infinisource.com

Im sure there are network gurus on F1 who can answer this one.
